Around the School
Year 11 VCAL class
Well done to Kaelie Walker and Chloe Fiskin from yr 11 VCAL who spent hours creating hygiene packs for the homeless and needy. Well done also to Indiana Naylor, Shannen Angus, Rebekah Kroenert who knitted scarves.
This was part of a community project to help the needy and homeless. The scarves and hygiene packs were given to the Salvation Army in the city who will be distributing them to those in need. These are a much needed addition towards their support for people.

VCE Studio Arts Excursion
The Picasso Century
On Thursday 4th of August, our VCE Studio Arts classes had the opportunity to attend the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). This excursion enabled students to gain an in-depth look at the preparation of a major international exhibition at the NGV. The program included an introductory talk to The Picasso Century winter masterpiece, exhibition viewing followed by a behind-the-scenes insights into the development of the exhibition provided by the senior curator, conservator, exhibition designer and marketing coordinator.
Learning Intentions:
Identify and describe the characteristics of an NGV gallery space
Analyse how specific artworks are presented in The Picasso Century and discuss the curator’s intentions
Analyse and evaluate curatorial considerations, exhibition design and promotional methods involved in preparing and presenting specific artworks in The Picasso Century
Analyse and evaluate methods and considerations involved in the conservation of specific artworks in The Picasso Century.
Top Arts
We also visited the Top Arts exhibition at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, Fed Square. NGV’s annual Top Arts exhibition has celebrated the artistic dynamism and creative vitality of young Victorians. Showcasing the exceptional work of students who have completed VCE Art or Studio Arts in 2021, the exhibition highlights the resilience and creativity of young artists, who have used art and design to explore and understand the world around them.
Learning Intentions:
Analyse and interpret themes, concepts and ideas in the work of students who have achieved outstanding results in VCE Studio Arts
Analyse and discuss sources of inspiration, materials and processes used by exhibitors
Describe how aesthetic qualities, art elements and art principles, and materials and techniques have been used to support the communication of ideas
Discuss the considerations and preparations made by the NGV for Top Arts 2022 including exhibition design, artwork conservation and the curatorial process.
Finally, students had the opportunity to view the Mirka Mora Flinders Steet Station Mural. This wonderful mural features images of animals, humans, strangers and angels in a garden which is full of bright colours. Through close engagement with the artworks, these excursions are dynamic, participatory and encourage collaboration and critical thinking.

Dina Mihailidis
Head of The Arts
Bonjour à tous,
My name is Océane and I’m a native French speaker from Paris.
Since I was a little girl, I have had a passion for Art, Sciences, languages and travelling. I have travelled a lot within Europe and to Canada to practice my English and German and, in April 2018 I arrived in Australia (Melbourne).
I started my career as an environmental engineer, but after undertaking some life/career coaching, I quickly realised that teaching was my vocation. After learning about the Australian culture, I decided it was time for me to share my own culture.
I’m currently working with the French Taechers as a French Language Teacher Assistant, but outside the school I’m a language tutor – for adults & kids. This means, that I teach French, English (to non-native speakers) and implement workshops/incursions with creative activities to teach languages.
I decided to join the Language Assistant program because I wanted to learn more about the Australian school system. But more importantly I wanted to understand my younger students, get to know what they are learning at school, what challenges they are facing and see how I could help.
I believe the key to reducing conflict in our society and enhancing our multi-cultural background here in Australia is by developing open-mindedness; and it starts with learning other languages and cultures. For that reason, I will be supporting Ringwood Secondary students in learning French, in a fun and creative way.
I’m looking forward to meeting the school community and if you wish to have a chat with me, please feel free to contact me: enjoyfrench.au@gmail.com.
Au Revoir
Dollars and Sense
As Part of Dollars and Sense students learn about the Sharemarket, they can put into practice what they are learning by playing the ASX Sharemarket Game. Students receive a virtual $50,000 they can invest over a 10-week period, in over 200 companies listed on the ASX. The prices students buy and sell at are the same prices as they would get in the live market so this is as close to real life share trading as you can get.
As a result of playing the Game students:
- Develop their knowledge of the sharemarket
- Learn how to research companies
- Discover the importance of wise investment decisions
- Gain a greater knowledge of economic and world events
Students have just started playing the ASX sharemarket game and are learning quickly that it is an ever-changing economic landscape.
Well done to Finn who is currently leading the class and 4th in Victoria.
