Year 5/6 City Excursion

Our City Excursion by Mietta L.

On 2 August, the year 5/6 students were lucky enough to do a walking tour in the city. We walked to Mitcham train station and took the train to Flinders street station. We were lucky enough to get great weather. Our first stop was at Federation square where we ate our morning tea. We danced on the big stage at Federation square as well.

At 10:00am we met our tour guide and he gave us all a character, who was a person involved in the Federation of Australia. He told us a few things about federation and how Melbourne used to be called the Port Phillip district and how it looked back then.

Next, he took us to the Yarra River and told us a story about a man who scammed the Aboriginals and took their land. He also had a few things to show us like edible plants that you can drink from and eucalyptus leaves that can help with colds. The 5/6 students then followed him to the Block Arcade where he told us about how people with lots of money made buildings like the arcade. He also showed us the town hall and what happened there.

After the tour we met back at Federation Square and walked to ACMI. At ACMI we saw a lot of technology and hands-on activities there were old video games and mini models of how houses used to look there was also things like old cars and clothes. Then at 2:00 our excursion sadly came to an end so we went back home on the train and walked back to school. This excursion was definitely one of the best excursions.

CITY EXCURSION by Daniela

On the 2nd of August the senior school kids went on an excursion to learn about Federation and the History of our city. It started at 9:00am when we caught the train. We walked to Mitcham station and the train ride was 40 minutes. When we arrived at our first stop, Federation Square, we had our fruit break. There was a stage there and the Year 6 girls had an idea. They performed their award winning dance to….. Can you keep a secret!!

At 10 o’clock we started our first activity which was a walk around the city. Courtney (the tour guide) took us to many places. Some examples are the Yarra River, St. Paul's Cathedral, The block arcade, The town hall and a lane way, with lots of cafes and art. When we were in the arcade Courtney gave us a eucalyptus lollie from the past. While we were on the tour we were given different characters and Courtney talked about federation. Everywhere we went had something to do with Australian history.

It was 12:00pm when we finished our tour, then we sat and went back to Federation Square to have lunch. There were lots of birds there and people were scared of them and then at 1:00 we went to ACMI where we saw the evolution of games and photos overtime. It was a very fun tour where we saw lots of different things. When our ACMI tour was finished we grabbed our bags and left.

The train ride home was very good though because all of us got seats and we sat with our friends. When we got back to school it was 3 o’clock and we packed up and went home. Overall, it was a very fun day and we all enjoyed it lots.

Federation Square and ACMI Excursion by Lexie

On  2 August, 2022, the Year 5 and 6 students went to the city for an excursion. We walked to Flinders Street Station.  When we arrived at Federation square we started a tour.

The guide showed us how people lived back then. We looked at a plant called Pig's Face which when you break it open and drink the juice it helps to stay hydrated. It was salty, so he gave us eucalyptus leaves which we could break it and breathe it in, as this is meant to get rid of colds.

Then we were walking all around the city the he gave us eucalyptus lollies. When we were at the artwork ally we got to place mini people all around. Next we stopped to have lunch then went to acmi. We were given a scanning card to know what we touched and saw. Finally, we had  to go to the train station to go back to school. We had our recess on the train and then it was the end of the day so we went home. It had been a great excursion.
