Term Three 2022

Maths Association Vistoria Year 5 Games Day

On Thursday 29th July, 8 Year 5 students participated in the MAV Games Day which was held at St Patrick's Primary School in Mentone. The students had a fantastic time and demonstrated team work, persistence and brilliant problem solving skills throughout each of the sessions.

We had 2 teams of 4 who competed in a competition which involved 80 students from 11 schools. They began the morning with some problem solving challenges which they worked on as a team. During the middle session they were taught a variety of maths games which were highly engaging and highlighted the importance of making maths meaningful and fun. By far the most popular game to play was a card game called Footy Fued but other great games were Mabble (a maths version of Scrabble), Prime Climb and Rowco.

In the afternoon, the teams competed in an Amazing Race style challenge which saw them running around the school grounds completing a variety of challenges, including looking for lines of symmetry, using strategies to find out how many window panes were on the side of a building and exploring length and area on the basketball courts.

I could not have been more proud of Carys, Lara, Lani, Noah, Charlie, Catherine, Lexi and Miles. Their brains were challenged and they needed to work collaboratively throughout the whole day, and they did so with integrity, respect and a Growth Mindset.
