On Saturday the 27th of August, the Science and Engineering Challenge Team members and parents held a sausage sizzle at Bunnings North Launceston.

It turned out to be an excellent day of fundraising, with over $1700 clear raised for our trip to the Bendigo Victoria National  Finals (after consumables are factored in). Thanks to all of the parents who helped out on the day. Thanks also goes to Team members Kynan Bonnice, Joshua Phelps, Benjamin Polis, Esther Dingemanse, Nicolas Rowlands, Ludwig Einkamerer and the crowd of Year 10’s that turned up on the day to cheer us on.

We would also like to thank Danny Marshall and Ravenswood IGA for their help with providing cost effective consumables for all of our fundraising ventures and offering assistance of any kind along the way.

Dodgeball match

LCS took part in their last fundraising event before the Science and Engineering Challenge Team travel to Bendigo in Term 4 to represent Tasmania in the National final of the Science and Engineering Challenge. This was a Casual Clothes Day, Canteen and Dodgeball match between College and Middle School Students. We had a great day raising funds for the trip and are now well set up so that the students can attend. A big shout out also goes to Mr Rob Gracie who organised the dodgeball game at lunch.

The Choice is Yours – JCP Seminar

On 23rd August, all of our Year 9 students attended a whole day seminar delivered by Will Smith, from JCP Youth. This was completely funded by the West Tamar Council, who also hosted the event at the Tamar Function Centre.

Our students responded really well to Will’s message around making choices to be leaders in community, through harnessing our strengths, building resilience and taking responsibility for our participation within the stories that we are telling and living.

It was inspiring to see many of our students challenged and seeking opportunities to serve as they continue in the journey towards adulthood.

Year 10 Excursion

On Tuesday the 9th of August, the Year 10’s visited the seahorse farm and Creation Discovery Centre as a part of their unit on Creation versus Evolution. This excursion day was the culmination of research into the different models of Creation and how this compares with the theory of evolution. The students had created creative pieces as a STEAM project (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) over the previous week and were able to use the information they had also gleaned from the Creation Discovery centre (and other guest speakers via video link at the school) to present to class their findings on different Creation models and their comparisons with Evolution models. This helped the students gain a solid understanding of the shared creation truths presented at LCS and also some of the arguments for and against the various models of creation and evolution presented.

National Cross Country Championships

Well done to Year 5 student Vienna Dingemanse for representing Tasmania at the National Cross Country Championships in Adelaide. Vienna came 39th overall and was the 4th Tasmanian under 11 girl over the line which also qualified her to run in the all girls relay team. She crossed in an excellent time of 13:38 for 3km on a muddy course!

Congratulations Vienna!

Year 9 Novelty Cake Creations

Lighthouse

Our Year 6 students are currently designing and building a working model of a lighthouse. They began working together, using paper mache to construct the land on which the lighthouse will stand.

There's lots of creative work here, and we look forward to another update in the following weeks!

Alumni Tops University Results

Congratulations to former Launceston Christian School student, Stuart Lake, who topped his Semester One university studies achieving a GPA of straight 7s, at The University of Queensland (UQ). Stuart is a Fresher at Cromwell College and lives on-campus at UQ. He highly recommends the supportive college lifestyle to any LCS students considering university studies in Brisbane.

National Science Week

In 2G students are learning about becoming scientists!  On Monday, we planted broad bean and sunflower seeds and will practice our skills in making predictions, observing and recording.  We learned about constants (our seeds and soil) and about variables (how much we choose to water our seeds).

We look forward to watching our seeds grow into the beautiful plants God created them to be.

LCS Science Fair

It's come that time of the year again for LCS science fair. This week at our LCS 2022 Science Fair year 9 Advanced Science students presented their UTAS Science Engineering and Research Investigation project boards to judges and primary school students. The research task provides students is a wonderful opportunity to ask big questions, conduct meaningful research and make exciting discoveries. There was a great range of research topics including,

  • which cricket ball will swing the most
  • what triggers elephants’ toothpaste
  • Using common rushes (plants) to generate renewable energy
  • The effect of metals on the pH of water

Students now look forward to presenting their research to visiting UTAS judges in September. They have done a wonderful job and I can't wait to see how they go.

Note for the office

ABSENCES/ATTENDANCE

Communication regarding a student’s absence needs to come via the school office. This information will then be passed on to the student’s teachers. Parents are asked where possible to telephone the school or email the office in advance when a student will be absent.  If you subscribe to the mobile app, The Hub you can also lodge an electronic absentee form which will reach the office immediately.  The school telephone number is (03) 6327 2854 and email is office@lcs.tas.edu.au

Students who are late must sign in at the school office.  Students will be issued a ‘late pass’ that must be presented to their teacher.  Students who sign in ‘late’ must have a note of explanation from home.   Three unexplained late arrivals will result in a detention.

Yr11/12 students that have a study period in the morning and do not attend Class Teacher must sign in at the office as soon as they arrive at school, if students have not signed in whole day absences will be on their record. Yr 11/12 students may leave the school grounds during study periods, however they are required to sign out and back in at the office.  This is important, particularly in the case of an emergency, so students can be accounted for by the staff and emergency services.

Written permission is required to leave the school grounds during school hours (except Year 11 & 12).  Students are to meet parents at the office. All students must use the sign out folder at the student counter in the main office.  When students return to school, they should report to the student counter in the main office and sign in.

If families intend to be absent from school due to extended holidays (3 days or more), parents need to fill out in advance an Application for Extended Leave for Travel form, found under the Parents and Students/Downloads & Policies tab on our website:  www.lcs.tas.edu.au(Please see Extended Leave Policy on next pages)

MEDICATION

Should your child need to take prescribed medication at school please inform the school office.  All medication, both prescription and over the counter medication, needs to be in original packaging and labelled with clear dosage instructions (prescription medication needs dosage instructions from a registered medical practitioner) and must be administered at the school office and students are not permitted to carry medication at school. Medical forms are sent home at the beginning of each school year and parents are able to indicate whether they give permission for paracetamol to be administered if required.

UNIFORM

Students who are not incorrect uniform, wrong jacket or coloured socks etc must get a uniform pass from the office.  A note of explanation should be provided by parents.  Three uniform non compliances, without parent explanation, will result in a detention.
