GRADE 5 SOVEREIGN HILL EXCURSION

The Grade 5 students made the yearly pilgrimage to Sovereign Hill last Friday. As we’re studying the Victorian Gold Rush this term, it’s the perfect way to immerse ourselves in what we’re going to learn about this term.  We did several activities including panning, bowling, a mine tour, gold pour show and also an Education session where the students dressed up to retell the main events of the Eureka Rebellion. It was an absolutely brilliant day!

MARINE AMBASSADORS

PEER TEACHING EXPERIENCE

By Emma P & Nuoqi S

(Two of your 2022 Marine Ambassadors for the Great Southern Reef)

Before the day. By Nuoqi

Peer teaching was on the 23th of June, Thursday. Our teacher (Miss Doutch) said we were going to be fine.

We had been preparing our speech, the pictures, the actions and how to answer the Year Two’s questions.

There were lots to do and it was a lot of fun.

The first activity we would do would be Marine Animals. We each had pictures and asked the children what they were, plus telling them a few things about them.

The second activity was Beachcombing. We would put out a mat and put some items that were found in the ocean and ask the kids to pick them up. We would tell a few facts about them.

The third and final activity was the Very Hungry Dolphins. This is  the most fun one and the one to get the kids to do some hands-on activities. Though it is dramatic, it gets the kids to want to learn about these more.

When we were presenting. By Emma

When we started presenting, it was really fun. I was with Cameron and Nuoqi was with Julian. We were nervous but ready. When we started the first activity, we had everyone hooked from the start. They were loving it!

We got so many great answers to all of the questions. All the kids loved it when we did the third activity. It was the most dramatic part and brought smiles to their little faces.

RECYCLING WORKSHOP

By Julian R & Alessio C

(Two of your 2022 Marine Ambassadors for the Great Southern Reef)

On the 14th of June Cheltenham East Primary School’s 6 Marine Ambassadors went to a workshop on recycling. We went to Namatjira Park where we all learned about the different types of garbage traps. There are big ones and small ones. We saw some workers cleaning out a section of a trap. We also checked the water quality of a lake by looking at the marine animals in the water and testing with a forensic science kit to measure the water quality.

After that we went to the Mordialloc Beach and had a look at the sand. There was a lot of rubbish and we realized that we use too much reusable rubbish.  We did a beach check and we collected lots of rubbish.  While we were doing the beachcombing we found a crab claw lying on the sand in between some bushes on the beach.  We found a floating trap on the water collecting all the rubbish that was coming.

PEER TEACHING WORKSHOP

By Cameron B (One of your 2022 Marine Ambassadors for the Great Southern Reef)

On Tuesday, 29th of March, the Marine Ambassadors went to Mentone Park Primary School to (MPPS) to learn about what we were going to do for our first Marine Ambassadors activity.  We started to learn about the 3 activities we were going to present to the Year 2s.  There was the “Marine Animals” activity, the “Beachcombing” activity, and finally, the activity “Can you help me find my food?”

Marine Animals

In this activity, the Marine Ambassadors would each have an animal to inform their fellow Marine Ambassadors from the other schools about. 2 of the Marine Ambassadors presented the Australian and Long-Nosed fur seals, explaining the differences in their behavior and some cool actions for everyone to follow along. Another Marine Ambassador then did the Decorator Crab. They had some other funky actions for everyone to follow along with as well, plus a beautiful costume that the Marine Ambassadors had handcrafted themselves for a volunteer to dress up in.

Next, was the Eleven-armed seastar.  The year 2s would act out a remarkably hilarious way of how the seastar ate its prey.  Then, it was time for the Port Jackson Shark.  The year 2s would observe the image of the shark, then guess what the object (egg) in its mouth was.  Lastly, one of our wonderful young marine ambassadors presented the “Moon snail egg sack.”  They explained that the correct thing to do if you find one of these, is to gently lay it back into the water, so it won’t dry out.

It is with great excitement we announce that our wonderful Book Fair will return in August this year. Student voice voted for, “Animals Real and Make-believe”. All children at CEPS had a choice of topics, including the CBCA theme, “Dreaming with your eyes open”.

We all know that animals can be found in both fiction and non-fiction books. It’s a great theme and we look forward to seeing the imagination and creativity on display at our themed dress up day.

Our CEPS Grade Six Library Monitors: Hudson, William, Nicole, Ivie, Rehatt, Anastasia, Laura and our two Grade Five helpers, Taylah and Sophie are all organising competitions and creating posters based on our theme.

Book Week has always been one of the yearly highlights at CEPS. We all value books and our school library support every student’s love of reading.

Grandparents and Special Friend’s Day has been cancelled due to the continued rise in COVID numbers.

Further information about Book Week and the Book Fair will follow in July.

Happy holiday reading!
