School Vision
During this term staff and the Governing Council have been working to reimage the School Vision to reflect the school community, the changing education agenda and align with the West Torrens Partnership. Through this process we have looked at:
What is a vision statement?
Vision statements define the schools purpose, they focus on our goals and aspirations. The statement is designed to be uplifting and inspiring.
What are our systems vision statements?
LNPS – Is a community minded and high achieving school. Students are happy, confident and successful learners.
West Torrens Partnership – A dynamic partnership to develop powerful leaners.
DECD – A high performing system that improves the educational attainment and wellbeing of South Australian's children and young people.
During this the process the term 'Powerful Learners' resinated with staff and Governing Council. This lead to the question - What are 'Powerful Learners'?
Powerful Learning is not a subject to be studied but is something the school community does in everyday life. It is not based on notions of personal power or power over others. Rather it refers to learners (this includes students, parents, teachers and the school community) who have the curiosity, creativity and confidence to:
*Actively participate in learning
*Make decisions based on sound evidence
*Skilfully solve problems and deal proactively with new situations
*Communicate effectively in a variety of forms
*Collaborate with others
Staff and Governing Council brainstormed words that they felt described Powerful Learners a LNPS. They included:
Diverse, Resilient, Engaged, Intrinsic, Interested, Collaborative, Creative, Confident, Challenged, Reflective, Positive, Curious, Motivated, Reflective, Independent, Empowered, Communicative, Empathetic, Compassionate, Sympathetic, Considerate
Powerful learners also have what Professor Carol Dweck terms a ‘growth mindset’ – the belief that they are capable of learning and achieving with effort. The attachment provides Professor Carol Dweck's 'growth mindset' model. This is taken from Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. The model explicitly explains characteristics that LNPS is instilling into our students and aligns with the Keys to Success that are explicitly taught in our classrooms.
From here a reimaged vision was developed taking into account all the componentss that were investigated.
'Lockleys North Primary School, a community of empowered learners who strive for success'
Staff and Governing Council are now seeking feedback from the school community in regards to their thoughts about the reimaged vision. If you would like to provide any feedback or have any questions or queries please email tyson.grinham428@schools.sa.edu.au or darrell@clearcutcomputers.com.au
