Stage 5 and Year 8 Japanese

In Japan, 5th May is Children's Day, when families celebrate the healthy growth and happiness of children. It became a national holiday in 1948, but it has been a day of celebration in Japan since ancient times.

On Friday, Stage 5 and Year 8 Japanese students celebrated this special day. Year 8 made Origami Koi carp and sang a song about the importance of Children’s day using Japanese vocabulary they have learnt in class.

Stage 5 are pictured in front of Koinobori flag that was raised for the day on Friday as the day is usually celebrated by the flying of Koinobori flags, which look as if they are swimming when they flutter in the breeze. Because carp are known for their ability to swim upstream, they symbolise courage and determination.

I extend special thanks to Mr. Grace who put Koinobori flag up to the blue sky in order to give opportunity to our students to experience diverse culture.

In the middle of the Stage 5 photo, you can see Sidney (Year 11) wearing a Samurai helmet which was made from Japanese coins and hand crafted by Evans sensei’s mother.

Wishing all our students healthy growth and happiness!
