Kids' Lit Quiz
Kids’ Lit Quiz Success!
On Monday, BMGS fielded five teams in the Central West Heat of Kids’ Lit Quiz, a competition celebrating the Sport of Reading. After stopping at Yetholme for a fun snow fight, our teams arrived in Bathurst ready to record written answers to 100 questions about literature. Teams are not told in advance which particular books are going to be covered, so team members had endeavoured to read as widely as possible and brush up on their knowledge of wide-ranging literature. We had been meeting regularly at school to undertake practice questions in the lead-up to this event.
There were ten rounds of ten questions each and teams were invite to choose a ‘Joker’ round at the outset, based on their category headings (such as Blindness, Giants, Animals, or Folktales), for which their score would be doubled. Our Senior School Teams 1 and 2 got off to a great start with perfect scores in their Joker rounds. Almost all of our teams won particular rounds, sometimes as a result of a sudden death play-off in the case of a tie, meaning that they could choose book prizes. Between rounds, the Quizmaster would pose questions that any individual could answer, and several BMGS students were successful in beating the rest of the room to the correct answer, earning themselves a $5 note!
The day was intense and lots of fun. All of our team members were enthusiastic and focussed, and are to be commended on their commitment and fabulous representation of our school. We are very excited that our BMGS Senior Team 1 won the Heat (with the highest score recorded in Australia so far this year) and will progress to the National Kids’ Lit Quiz Final at the State Library on June 5. Congratulations to Elise Lowe, Bronte Secker, Clare Stewart and Grace Wesley (Year 7)!
BMGS Senior Team 2 (Simeon Gee, Gracie Olmos, Charlotte Scott and Neva Stockwell) also performed very strongly to finish 3rd. Our Junior Team 1 (Rosie Griffin, Jack Lowe, Mikhaela Sommerville and James Tierney) finished 6th, just one point behind =4th, and our Junior Team 2 (Matilda Hewatt, Abbie Johnson, Ava Parker and Robbie Sommerville) finished 8th. Our fifth team was made up of an admirably adaptable group of students from the Junior School (Darcey Fisher and Carlyle Magee) and Senior School (Josh McLean and Ethan Ramaiya) who joined forces to finish 12th out of 27 teams. Mrs Newton and I were delighted that BMGS achieved such impressive results and we all wish Bronte, Clare, Elise and Grace the very best as they prepare for the National Final.
