Junior School

This week I accompanied Dr Elissa Drew and twenty children to the “Kids Lit Quiz” regional heat in Bathurst. We entered five teams into the competition and the standard was high. It was the highest scoring heat across the country and one of our teams – Clare, Elise, Bronte and Grace - were the winners and will be off to Nationals at the State Library!

Another of our teams – Simeon, Graciella, Charlotte and Neva - came third, and all of our teams finished in the top half of the heat. Thank you so much to all the hours Dr Drew has given to ensure these avid readers have a great opportunity to pursue their interest.

On Tuesday Mrs Spohr and Mrs Walker took a large group of Stage 2 and Stage 3 girls to a Netball gala day in Penrith. The girls have had some training sessions with Mrs Spohr and Mrs Hyslop and many play Netball on the weekends. The girls had a great time playing with their friends against many different school groups from Penrith. Our Stage 2 girls had quite a lot of success, winning most of their games and everyone in both age groups had a ‘ball’. Thank you to the staff who gave their time so the girls had this opportunity.  A report from Mrs Spohr appears below.

On both campuses this week we have been celebrating our mums. Pre K at Wentworth Falls hosted their mums for a ‘crafternoon’ in the new atelier, Springwood dads have put out pastries and coffee for mums on Thursday, and some Wentworth Falls mums have attended breakfast in the Kedumba Gallery. Our P&F groups on both campuses have run fabulous Mother's Day stalls and I know there will be lots of spoilt and appreciated mums this Sunday.

Our classes have continued looking at the Ingredients of Play in assembly this week. Stage 3 Yarramundi and Kindergarten at Springwood presented on ‘Sharing ideas and compromise’. This can be difficult for students across the whole of the Junior School and we know that students are benefitting from exploring these ideas together in assembly. Knowing that we are all talking about these ideas together means that when staff are helping students sort out issues I the playground, we are all on the same page. Please come along to our assemblies – parents are welcome every week.

Netball Gala

On Tuesday, a wonderful group of junior school students from Springwood and Wentworth Falls campus attended an open schools Netball NSW gala day at Jamison Park. All students represented Blue Mountains Grammar proudly as they participated in a competitive round robin competition in the Year 3/4 and 5/6 division.

It was absolutely wonderful to see every student participating positively and showing great sportswomanship. I was particularly proud of the students that played in the competition who haven’t before and pushed themselves out of their comfort zone. The level of teamwork and passion on the court was excellent to see.

The two most outstanding students in the Year 3/4 division were Poppy her exceptional defensive skills saved many of the oppositions shots. Madeline scored the most goals during the day and her accuracy when shooting was phenomenal.  In the 5/6 division, Rose was outstanding in her ability to strategically control the game and mentor other students. Hayley and Hana were outstanding in their ability to galvanise the teams and successfully shot at goal.

A special mention to Rose P for umpiring the  majority of the games and for going above and beyond to help.
