Year 6 Canberra Trip

Canberra trip report:

By Elsie Taylor

Day 1:

We arrived at school early with our backpacks and duffle bags ready for the four hour bus ride. On the bus Norah and I listened to music and watched the scenery. Then they played a movie.

When we arrived at Canberra we drove straight to the war memorial. We split into two groups and I was in Mrs Moss’ group. At the war memorial we observed the motor of an old plane, saw the eternal flame and the reflection pool, the roll of honour, and I even got the opportunity to place a poppy on the unknown soldier's grave.

Next we had lunch at the old parliament house gardens and then we went to parliament house. At parliament house we watched the 90 second statements made by the politicians, held a mock parliament where I got to be the speaker of the house, saw the senate, had frozen yoghourt next to a Lego diorama of parliament house and met Jenny Ware the member for Hughes.

Thirdly, we went to the visitors centre where we learnt how Canberra came to be, who built it, and why it was made. We also designed our own Canberra cities and saw a giant diorama of Canberra.

Finally, we arrived at the hotel. The managers came and spoke to us and then the teachers told us whose room we would be in. I was in a room with Caitlin, Norah, Elise, Millie and Erin. We quickly unpacked and then came down for dinner. At dinner we had the option of fish and chips or nachos and I chose Nachos. There was also a desert of chocolate mousse.

After dinner we all went up to our rooms, had showers and got into our PJ’s after that we watched a movie, played board games, did each other's hair and eventually went to sleep.

Day 2

We woke up and quickly packed and then came downstairs for breakfast. At breakfast we had the option of scrambled eggs, spaghetti, vegemite, honey or jam on toast and juice.

After breakfast we played board games and got back on the bus. On the way to Questacon we stopped at Mt Ainslie lookout and the view was amazing.

After Mt Ainslie lookout we arrived at Questacon. We looked at all the showrooms and in one of them was a giant 6ft free fall drop slide! I went on the slide even though it was super scary. Then we went to the gift shop and bought some things.

Last but not least we went to the old parliament house, had lunch, went to the AEC and had a mock vote about fruits. Finally we drove home and on the way had a delicious dinner of MCDONALDS.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education.  To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributed funding of $30  per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs.  The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
