THE ARTS

T2 2023

Happy 50th birthday, Hackham East PS!

Over the first 5 weeks of this term, every student in every unit was involved in Visual Arts or Media Arts projects to celebrate our school’s inaugural 50th birthday celebration. Students in Castle Unit designed, constructed and decorated birthday cake sculptures using boxes, cellophane, tissue paper, straws, pom-poms, wool, plasticene, sequins, patty pans and ribbons. They also made candle or balloon picture collages using coloured paper and gift wrapping. Holly Unit classes designed, modelled, painted and decorated a cupcake using air dry modelling clay. The students in the Stillwell Unit classes created a photo collage using a theme relating to our school. Hopefully you got a chance to see the wonderful learning in the Arts by our students in the Penney Space on Saturday. If you missed this opportunity, I have included some photos below.

The last half of this term sees our Holly Unit students participating in the Southgate Square NAIDOC competition where they will design and illustrate pages for an upcoming children’s story book in the Drawing Us Together series. This series celebrates diversity and strengthens understanding of Aboriginal culture. Mrs Dunn and Phoebe Lekkas ( our Aboriginal Education team) will be assisting classes in developing their ideas and drawings. The winning illustrations will hopefully have their work published in the book.

Castle Unit will be introduced to the concept of animation through various activities such as making thaumatropes ( early animation toys- see image) and flip books as part of their Media Arts learning.

Classes in Stillwell will be going deeper with their photography learning. With their photo taking, they will be focussing on the Rule of Thirds technique with their composition as well as hints with lighting and exposure. Students will learn some basics of photo editing, for example, how to effectively crop a photo and how to adjust filters to enhance the shot.

HEPS Choir

The Choir has had a busy month preparing two songs for the 50th birthday. Miss Hay and myself were very proud of their efforts on Saturday, singing Proud Mary and Celebration to everyone that came along. Congratulations to our soloists- Natalie Allwood, Charlotte Allen, Lily Hay, Lily Robbins and Kyler Burford on their fantastic performances. Special mention to Lily Knight who was also a soloist for Proud Mary at our school assembly in Week 4. All Choir members must now work hard over the next few months to learn the rest of the songs in the repertoire for the Southern Metropolitan Music Festival later this year.
