Bonjour à tous! Hello everyone!
It has been wonderful to have students back this term and to see how they have continued to demonstrate their School Values and the Golden Rule. Students have been participating in lots of conversations and games this term, getting ready for French Day.
HEPS FRENCH DAY – WEEK 10 FRIDAY 7th JULY
This year’s French Day is just around the corner! The theme is ‘Les Magasins’ – French shops. A grand merci to Kevin who has spent many hours helping to make our fantastique market stalls. These were on display outside the French classroom at our 50th birthday celebration and classes have been given the opportunity to see and discuss the market stalls in their French lessons.
To help prepare for the day, our Year 6s have been researching their chosen shop and creating a suitable lesson and activity to teach on the day. They will now be making food to put into their market stall and learning how to pretend sell their items.
French Day will begin with a whole-school Welcome Assembly at 9am. At the assembly the winners of the French market stall drawing competition will be announced (these will be started in French lessons and can be completed in free time/at home). Parents and care-givers are more than welcome to attend, which will be the perfect opportunity to see students in their different French dress ups.
Below is a list of ideas for what students can wear. There is absolutely no need to spend a lot of money or time on outfits, the idea is to have some fun and feel a part of the day. Although students and staff are encouraged to attend the day wearing French inspired outfits, this is not compulsory.
The canteen will have a special French lunch order available for the day, with order forms coming soon. All students will be treated to a French cookie as a grand merci for taking part in the day. Please note that some classes will also partake in food tasting, so any student allergies will be considered in this.
The day will end at 2pm, as it is our end of term early finish. Please collect your child as you normally would.
FRENCH LEARNING
During this term, Reception to Year 5 classes have been working hard to practice words and phrases relating to different food at French shops, along with shopping conversations.
They can now suitably greet a shop-owner with “Bonjour Madame/Monsieur”. Students know that they can say “Je voudrais” (I would like) followed by their chosen items to order their food. They can use “Merci” (thank you) and/or “S’il vous plaît” (please) in order to be polite, which is very important in French culture. Students also know to end their transaction with “Au revoir!” as they leave the store. Some students have been exploring using the connective “et” (and) to extend their sentences and numbers to ask for more than one of a food (e.g. “Bonjour Madame. Je voudrais une baguette et trois croissants, s’il vous plaît. Au revoir!”)
Students have been learning about Cafés, Boulangeries, Patisseries, Crêperies and Crémeries. They know what is sold in these shops and how to pronounce the words. Students have been practicing using these words in sentences through games and verbal interactions. Stillwell students have also learnt a variety of drinks that could be ordered at a café.
HOME LEARNING
A reminder that there is some online learning available to all students using the following QR code. When you get to the page, you will find game links and different videos supporting our French learning. This is a great way for your child to revise some of their French and learn some new vocabulary.
I look forward to celebrating French Day with our school community.
Merci! Madame Mawson
