Deputy Principal's Message

A reminder that Year 4 and Year 6 students will be participating in check-in assessments over the coming weeks. These tests will help to identify how students are performing in literacy and numeracy and assist teachers to tailor their teaching to student needs.

Wonder Recycling Rewards

This term, the SRC have decided to initiate Ben Venue's participation in the Wonder Recycling Rewards program. The SRC are passionate about educating our students on the importance of recycling and have been looking for ways to raise funds for more playground and sporting equipment. The Wonder Recycling Rewards program is the perfect combination of the two!

How does it work?

Students are asked to collect any soft plastic bread bags and place them into the collection boxes located in the office and outside the Special Programs Room. Please make sure the bags are empty and free of crumbs. Bags will be collected between now and the end of term. The more bags we collect, the more reward points we earn and the more sporting equipment we will be able to order.

The bread bags will then be sent off to be recycled. APR Plastics manages the recycling process. The plastic is processed into an oil that can be reused to create food grade packaging, creating a circular economy. You can learn more about what they do by clicking here.

Key points to remember:

  • What classifies as a bread bag? - The rule of thumb is that if it has contained bread of some sort (bread, rolls, wraps) and is a soft plastic, then it is a bread bag. If it has not contained bread, then it is not a bread bag.
  • Bread bags should be as free from crumbs as they can be to keep the recycling process free from contamination (there is no need to wash them).
  • Keep collecting right up until the last day of Term 2, Friday 30 June.

The SRC would like to thank you in advance for your support of this important initiative. We look forward to seeing our collection boxes full of bread bags, ready to be recycled!

Term 2 School Development Day

As part of the Term 2 School Development Day, our teachers, office and support staff participated in a series of professional learning sessions focused on Aboriginal education, reconciliation and tackling racism in schools. The purpose of the sessions was for staff to build a greater understanding of Aboriginal education and reconciliation, as well as examine how we can collectively strengthen our practice to achieve better outcomes and sustain positive change.

As a direct result of the day, Ben Venue PS is beginning the process of developing a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) using Reconciliation Australia’s RAP framework and their Narragunnawali: Reconciliation in Education platform. A key focus of our RAP will be to develop environments that foster a high level of knowledge and pride in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and contributions. We look forward to building on our current practice and introducing practical and meaningful reconciliation initiatives in the classroom, around the school and with the community.
