Year 4 Urban Gardening
What are Seed Bombs?
Seed bombs are marble-sized balls of clay embedded with several seeds. The clay surrounding the seeds helps protect them against hungry wildlife, shields them a little against extremes of temperature, and weighs them down so they don’t blow away in the wind. And once rain arrives to 'explode' the bombs, the clay and soil mixture gives the seeds the perfect start for germination.

On a cold and wet Friday all the Year 4 students stayed inside for their gardening class and made 460 seed bombs. Seed bombs contain clay, compost and flower seeds. We mixed all the ingredients together into balls with our hands, it was very messy! We put them into egg cartons to dry.
We will put the seed balls in our school garden. The seeds will grow into colourful flowers that will attract bees to our garden and our bee hotel.
