Learning and Teaching News

As we move towards the end of the first semester, the routines, high expectations and procedures that teachers have implemented across all classes are well and truly embedded.

This ensures learning is our focus.

Wandering through learning spaces, Prep classes are already independently recording their learning experiences through writing. The excursion to Animal Land resulted in some very impressive, creative pieces that demonstrated the impact of 'real world' learning.

Year Ones and Twos are engaged in talking and writing about their recent excursion to the Werribee Zoo.

The Year Three and Four students are continuing to hone their hip hop dance moves after an incursion where Ben taught them some new ways to move and groove.

The Year Five/Six students are preparing for an expo to showcase their ethical business ideas having spent time researching, planning, budgeting and creating prototypes.

Learning has also been happening for our parents.

Over 150 parents attended our Family Maths Information Night on Tuesday June 6th.

Thank you for taking the time out of your busy lives to attend this night. It was a great opportunity for us to discuss how we can foster a positive attitude towards Mathematics.

One important thing we talked about was the power of having the right mindset. We highlighted the importance of showing Maths in a positive light to our kids. A reminder when we talk about Mathematics, to use words that inspire and encourage our children to think positively and with a can-do attitude when learning Maths. A reminder for ourselves never to say in front of them "I was never good at Maths" instead say "let's solve this together.

We also discussed the way we talk about Mathematics matters. Sometimes, without realizing it, we may unintentionally discourage our children by immediately providing answers or solutions. Let's give them the chance to figure things out themselves. It builds their confidence and problem-solving skills.

We learned that games are a fun and engaging way for children to learn mathematics. Rather than relying only on worksheets, we encourage you to play games with your child. It not only helps them practice Maths skills but also allows you to spend quality time together. Why not ask your child to teach you a game they've learned in class? Michael Minas' Maths website can be found linked here.

Lastly, we reminded parents not to be like a teacher outside of learning time. It's important to remember that we have different roles as parents and teachers. When it's not the designated learning time, let's avoid using a "teacher voice" or correcting our children constantly. They need time to relax and enjoy themselves.

We hope these points from the Parent Information Night help you support your child's learning journey. Remember, a positive mindset, mindful language, enjoyable games, and allowing for free time are all essential in fostering a love for Mathematics.

Have a safe, healthy and happy holiday.
