Year 2 Maths: Location Location Location!

This week, the Year 2 children embarked on a journey into the realm of location and mapping. As part of their exploration today, the children engaged in a dance routine, using it as a means to master the language of direction. Additionally, they delved into the concept of a bird's eye view. To grasp this perspective, the children utilized Google Earth to observe their school from an aerial standpoint. This allowed them to closely examine the shapes and proportions of the space, while pondering and responding to inquiries about what was visible, what remained hidden, and the reasons behind such observations. To apply their newfound knowledge, the children illustrated a bird's eye view of their classroom.

Finnan: "I learnt what anticlockwise meant because it’s the other way around for clocks."

Asha: "Today I learnt what a bird's eye view means. It’s like a picture from above. I drew a birds eye view of my classroom."

Reiltin: "I learnt that I had to imagine what all the different parts of the room would look like. I knew the tables would look like rectangles from above."

Year 1 Bee Exploration: Outdoor Ed

In our outdoor education program, our Year 1 cohort embarked on an exciting journey into the world of bees. They made fascinating discoveries about these industrious creatures. Thanks to our Media Leaders in Year 6, we were able to capture some of those discoveries below:

Our young nature enthusiasts learned that bees play a crucial role in sustaining life on our planet. Without bees, there would be no vibrant flowers or essential pollination for plants and crops. A single honeybee dedicates its entire life to producing just one teaspoon of honey. Bees communicate the location of flowers through a captivating dance, wiggling their bottoms to show the way.

The Year 1 cohort identified three types of bees: bumblebees, Australian native bees, and drone bees. They discovered that bees have one stinger and five eyes, giving them a unique perspective on the world. Queen bees, who live for an impressive 200 days, guide their colonies with grace and authority.

Armed with these newfound bee facts, our Year 1 cohort now has a deep appreciation for these incredible insects and their vital role in our natural world.

VicPol COPPS event

Last week the 5’s and 6’s went to Dixon field to play some soccer with the cops. We did this for awareness about the police always being there to help you, not to arrest you. We thanked them for organising the day and making it really fun because we played some soccer. They gave us a signed soccer ball, a certificate and a miniature banner in appreciation of us coming down.

3/4 Camp

The Year 3 & 4 camp at The Ranch on the Mornington Peninsula was a thrilling adventure from Monday the 22nd of May to Tuesday the 23rd of May. The children had an unforgettable experience. They engaged in a wide range of activities including horse riding, conquering the breathtaking 18-meter-high giant swing, rock climbing, exploring the art of bush cooking, and delving into the fascinating world of ocean fossils and Aboriginal Artefacts. Below are some of our campers recounts of the experience:

At a place called The Ranch. I waited anxiously to get on and ride the horse.

As I was waiting in the line, my heart skipped a beat.  When I got on the horse I closed my eyes, as the horse lead me through with a breeze flowing through my face. It felt like freedom. - Tayla

In a stable at The Ranch, I waited nervously to ride a horse. Then it was my turn. I stepped up on the board, I put my foot in the stirrup and put my other leg around the horse. Feeling mixed emotions I used the reins to move the horse through the cones. As I kept on going with the horse, I started to build my confidence up and didn’t feel nervous anymore.I had so much fun at camp. - Neva

District Soccer

On Wednesday the 24th of May, Holy Cross School entered a boy's team and a girl's team in the highly anticipated District Soccer event. The dedication and hard work of both teams were evident as they trained tirelessly in the period leading up to the competition. We extend our gratitude to the Parent coaches who generously shared their soccer expertise during the training sessions, contributing to the teams' success.

The outstanding performances of both teams can be attributed to their exceptional teamwork and effective communication on the field. Led by the weekend soccer trio of Sian, Kate, and Maisy, our Girl's team secured a remarkable tie for first place in their pool. Although they narrowly missed out on reaching the grand final due to a lower overall score countback, their remarkable efforts earned them a commendable 4th place overall. It was a fantastic achievement.

Similarly, the boy's team displayed exceptional skill and teamwork, earning them a tie for first place in their pool. Despite not making it to the grand final due to a lower winning margin, they finished the competition with a powerful surge, securing a well-deserved 3rd place overall.

Our Year 6 Media Leaders set out to interview the teams and capture the essence of the District Soccer experience in a single word. Here's what the players had to say:

"Exciting" - Rose

"Challenging" - Priscilla

"Entertaining" - Channing

"Competative" - Harley

"Thrilling" - Grace

We extend our congratulations to all the players and express our sincere appreciation to the coaches and supportive parents who cheered on Holy Cross with unwavering enthusiasm. We look forward to another exciting soccer event next year, and we hope to see many familiar faces joining us once again!

Holy Cross Athletes Shine at Division Cross Country

We are thrilled to announce the outstanding achievements of some of our exceptional young athletes from Holy Cross at the Division Cross Country. The event took place in Bacchus Marsh yesterday and although the weather was icy and windy our determined runners pushed through to achieve some wonderful results.

Running in the highly competitive 12/13 Year Old Boy's division were Eoin, Taylan, and Xavier. Before the race, the boys prepared for the long run, bravely shaking off any nerves in the process. In the end the race results were outstanding with Xavier coming in 1st, Taylan finishing 5th and Eoin crossing the line in 11th place.

Competing in the 11 Year Old Girl's division, was the fast-paced Isabella, proudly representing our school. The moment the race commenced Isabella ran like the wind, disappearing down the track in a flash. Minutes later Isabella could be seen crossing the line in 1st place!

In our 9/10 year Old Girls and Boy's divisions we also had several talented athletes compete, including Jameson, Jack, Adrian and Summer. All four of our runners performed beautifully, making Holy Cross a tough team to race. Overall the results reflected incredible successes from all our competitors. Adrian zipped over the line in 1st place, Jameson in 5th, Jack finished 8th, and Summer crossed the finish line in 20th place.

The day was fantastic from start to finish, and we are incredibly proud of all our athletes, especially the determination and sportmanship they consistently displayed when representing our school.

We would also like to acknowledge Charlotte, Pat and Aiden, who qualified for the event, but were unable to compete due to unforseen circumstances.

Let's extend our congratulations to these outstanding athletes and wish them the best of luck as many of our competitors will continue on to the Regional event.
