It’s been another busy and productive week at Croydon Hills Primary!  As part of their Global Education inquiry unit, the Seniors went on an excursion to the Immigration Museum. They participated in a museum-led session exploring the different heritages of modern day Australians, and had the chance to look at some of the stories of Australia's immigrants. They also got to experience the IMAX cinema - what a treat!

I am sure the Year 2 students in JLC, JRB and JBJ had a wonderful time at Mont de Lancey on Thursday. The excursion was a great way to support the students' learning in their inquiry unit, ‘Back in the Day’. They looked amazing in their ‘olden days’ costumes too!  I’m sure JPB and JKB will have just as much fun on Monday.

This Friday, there is a Prep Assembly in the PAC and Senior Assembly in the Stadium. We encourage parents to attend if possible.  Level Assemblies provide a wonderful opportunity for students to share and celebrate their learning.

Mathematics & Numeracy at Home

As your child’s first teacher, you play an important role in helping develop their numeracy skills from an early age.

Numeracy skills give children an important start to their learning and development. They also help prepare them for daily life at all ages. For example, in handling money and problem solving.

Numeracy is more than numbers. For example, numeracy helps us:

  • understand and use numbers and other mathematical ideas in everyday life
  • recognise and use shape
  • work out the chance of something happening
  • understand the data we see in the media.

Numeracy is necessary for everyday living. From daily activities like telling the time, cooking and setting the table, to more difficult tasks such as understanding mobile phone plans, planning a trip, reading a map and understanding timetables.

As children and young people move through life stages, the everyday numeracy demands become more complex.

This Numeracy at Home guide provides information, advice and activities for families to help their child’s numeracy learning at home.

Keep an eye on your level Compass posts to find out what your child is learning each week.
