“ Sir Edward “Weary” Dunlop Commemorative Service”

On July 12th the Dunlop Student Leadership Group attended the Sir Edward “Weary” Dunlop Commemorative service to pay respects to Dunlop.  Upon returning several of the students reflected on the day and found it to be one of great reverence. 

Olivia Corrente stated that “myself and my fellow students witnessed the very solemn and respectful service held not only for Weary himself, but for the many soldiers who were victims of the war. It was very rewarding to hear from war veterans about their experiences, as well as the horrific experiences of Sir Weary Dunlop. It was a steady reminder of how privileged our own lives are and how lucky we are to have the opportunity to honour heroic people like Dunlop, who are exceptional examples of how to live with courage, commitment and forgiveness.  While Alicai Grech highlighted “ the commemorative Service was one of great triumph, honour, and remembrance. With the the wise words of Mr. Colin Brooks MP, Reverend Ernest Horth, and Mr. Mike O'Meara, the courage and nobility of the Dunlop legacy was bestowed upon the crowd of distinguished guests and students. The Royal Australian Airforce Band Melbourne made a phenomenal contribution to the service, which has left a lasting impact of reverence on the Dunlop SLG.  And finally Ruiz Binghay was “overwhelmed by the presence of individuals with high authority such as the secretary for the Victorian PM, coming to pay respects for Sir Weary Dunlop. We met many inspirational people from the leaders of the Dunlop medical research foundation, to the service people of the Red Cross serving food in the cold after the event, despite the changing weather conditions, the event was perfect all the way through, and overall was a day to remember.”

As elicited by the students above the day has left a permanent reminder of the sacrifice that the young men and women of this country undertook and the courage it took to follow it through.  Lest We Forget .
