PRAYER:   Thank you God for the gift of laughter.

A smile starts on the lips,

A grin spreads to the eyes,

 A chuckle comes from the belly;

But a good laugh bursts forth from the soul,

 Overflows, and bubbles all around.

 Carolyn Birmingham

The simple truth is, as the Book of Proverbs reminds us: “A joyful heart is good medicine." (Prov. 17:22)

Humour is a prelude to faith and laughter is the beginning of prayer.  - Reinhold Niebuhr

Laughter:  Dr Martin Chatterton, an author and illustrator, visited the Junior School on Tuesday and he was fantastic.  He was engaging, entertaining and pitched his presentation at the boys’ age group.  He is a very talented cartoonist/illustrator and the boys enjoyed his caricatures.  It was fun to hear the boys laughing and enjoying themselves.  Definitely a dinner table conversation starter for your home.

Debating:  Well done to our two debating teams on their efforts last week at Masada.  Both teams did a great job.  While I was listening to them I was reflecting on what a wonderful skill it is to develop plus the self confidence that it engenders.  More information from Mrs Schiller can be found below.

Sport:  This week is Gala Day.  Sport is at the normal time and boys will be divided into teams for small sided games.  They need to bring their St Pius X Jersey and another jersey (or play with the jersey inside out).   This is the conclusion of the winter season.

Sport next week will be Summer sports trials with tennis at Roseville.  Presentation nights will follow in the coming weeks.

The Book Week Parade will be on Wednesday 21 August at 9.00am.  Parents/grandparents are most welcome.

Walkathon:   Please find below a letter regarding the Junior School Walkathon.  The letter outlines where the money raised will go, and gives a brief description of each.  The concept is for the boys to put themselves out for those less fortunate than themselves:  we are 'Walking for Others'.  In later years at the College they will have the opportunity to physically assist at places such as Matthew Talbot Hostel.

The Walkathon takes place in three weeks' time, on Thursday 22 August, during our sporting time.  Your support of this social justice initiative would be appreciated.

Junior School Father & Son Sporting Afternoon:  This week Mr Virgona will issue the digital invitation where you can say that you will be attending and the sports you would like to play.  Grandfathers are fathers and are most welcome to attend.  In some case it may be a significant uncle that can attend.   They can be involved or spectate and enjoy a sausage sizzle at the conclusion.  We will have various sports ranging from touch football, football to table tennis.  Thank you to the mothers who have emailed me offering to assist with the barbeque.

This is a great age where they really want a significant figure to be close by, whereas when they get older they want you around but at a distance.   It is a valuable bonding opportunity and a bit of a laugh!

IPSHA Junior School Debating

“That we should ban child actors” was the topic for Round 5 of the IPSHA competition on Friday 2 August against Masada College.  The Affirmative team, comprised of Isaac Donlevy, William Fiore and Ethan Auer, presented effective arguments confidently and convincingly. Their outstanding efforts resulted in a victory. Their case line ‘Hollywood…let children be children!’ was catchy as well as appropriate.  Congratulations boys!

Despite the Negative team’s tenacious fight, Regan Yun, Luke Mortimer and Jet Stump lost their debate this round. The three boys spoke with conviction as they advocated their arguments. The adjudicator praised both Masada and St Pius teams for each having raised very good points.  However, Masada had the edge and thus won the debate. Congratulations Masada!

Please note that the Book Week Parade will be on Wednesday 21 August at 9.00am.  Parents/grandparents are most welcome.

Dr Martin Chatterton visited Years 5 and 6 on Tuesday 6 August. The boys were thoroughly engaged and especially thrilled during the live drawing part of Martin’s presentation. Martin really delivered a lively interactive theatrical performance and also included beneficial writing advice to our young writers at St Pius X College.

Reading is my Secret Power – CBCA Eve Pownall Information Book

Sorry Day by Coral Vass.

This week we will be reading and discussing the Eve Pownall Information Picture Book Sorry Day by Coral Vass and Dub Leffler - PRC 29801.   Two stories entwine in this captivating retelling of the momentous day when Australia acknowledged the sorrows of past.

Premier’s Reading Challenge 2019:  A reminder that the PRC finishes Friday 30 August 2019 at midnight.  To complete the Challenge, you need to read 15 books from the PRC Reading List and FIVE books of your own choice.

Guessing Competition for Book Week 2019:  Clue Number 2

When people tell me to get with the program, I’m pretty good at doing that.

Book Prize for the student who can guess who I am!

Mrs Martin’s Book Trail:   Pie in the Sky by debut author Remy Lai

This book is an absolute treat. It’s the story of Jingwen who moves to Australia with his mother and brother after the death of his father. With no English to speak of and dealing with grief, a new country and a new school, all Jingwen wants is to belong. This wonderful story is both funny and sad, full of illustrations (and even a recipe). It’s a richly rewarding middle-grade read and I loved every page! #MrsMartinsbooktrail2019

Happy Reading!

Football:   Round 9 Results and Round 10

Another great weekend of football for the St Pius X Junior football teams. It’s great to see the passion and enthusiasm in all of the teams in the penultimate game of the season. While there are no ‘finals’ in ISA Junior sport, the boys gave their ‘all’ for their team and the College. 7 wins and 2 draws for another undefeated round. Thanks parents for your continue support. Looking forward to our last game of the season.

This week all teams are at Oxford Falls except for the 11Ds who travel to Bark Huts against St Patricks. Mrs Barrett will manage the team for this game while Mr Rosano will take charge of the 11Es.
