Football Success for two Year 12 SPX students

St Pius X College has just received  the exciting news that its star forward, Jack Berte, has been picked for the Australian Schools Opens side to tour the UK & Ireland in January.  Jack, who has played for the College 1st XI for three seasons, progressed through the School, ISA, CIS and NSW Representative  sides to be selected in the touring squad of sixteen players. Jack’s selection for Australian Schools is the College's first such representative since 2002 when student Daniel Bateup received similar recognition.

Jack has personally had a brilliant season but importantly been a part of the successful SPX 1st XI which won the state-wide NSWCIS Cup, July Cup and St Andrew’s Plate. The side currently lead the ISA competition and Jack will try to help St Pius X College lift the All Schools Championship against Westfield Sports High in September.

There is more wonderful news for SPX football as Year 12 Student Lucas Rainbird made his NPL First Grade debut last weekend, where he was named 'Man of the Match'.  Lucas did so after passing up the same opportunity earlier in the season, choosing instead to appear in our NSWCIS Cup winning side on that fateful June Wednesday night. Congratulations to Lucas proving once again that playing school football enhances opportunities to excel.

From the Rugby Development Officer

13A light the way

Competitiveness gets you so far and I’m pleased to say in all the games I watched on Saturday there was evidence of this. Not only were the 13As super competitive, they had the desire and the skill to get the win, albeit in the final moments. They’ve also developed a vocal supporter base urging them on from the touchline. Mr Rogers and all the 13's coaches deserve praise for the style of play they have developed over the season.

Elsewhere there was great commitment but wins proved hard to come by.  The Opens First’s once again proved very competitive in the early stages of the game but unfortunately couldn’t convert pressure into points. This young side will have learnt a lot this season and although the wins have been hard to find, they will be a smarter team next season.

Doug Braddock (14B) and Alex Hart (16A) deserve praise for their performances and leadership, not only on Saturday but throughout the season.

The challenge to all our teams this week is to finish strongly Away at St Pat’s. The final game of any season is often a mental challenge based around, “How much do you really want to win this game?”

I’m confident all our teams can come away with winning performances.

A win by our Opens Firsts is well within their capability and will indicate very strongly how competitive we can be in 2020.

Lets win and enjoy the final game of the season.

Last weekend saw our teams playing against Barker and St Andrew's Cathedral School.  Both our Division 1 and 10 teams brought a strong game against Barker and both easily took the win with their 8-scores. In their whole matches, Div 1 only gave up 11 points and Div 10 only lost 9 points. Congratulations also go to Divisions 2, 3 and 6 who also saw victory and Division 5 just missed out on a win by one single point in their match against St Andrew's.

The next, and our last Round of the competition before Finals, is this Saturday. We will be playing against a few different teams at three different venues, so please check the draw below carefully. Best of luck to all players!

Following this Saturday’s matches, the top two teams in each Division will go through to the Finals. These will be held at Barker College on Saturday 17 August. I will let you know the results and the Finals teams via email when they come through next week. The Finals teams will all have training on Tuesday afternoon only.
