Vaping Update

Last week several staff attended a webinar with Paul Dillon on vaping. This provided the School with information on the latest developments in this area which will be utilised in the delivery of PDHPE curriculum and through Wellbeing sessions. One of the key messages from Paul was that vaping should be part of discussions at home. In short, the recommendation is not to force the matter but establish with your children where you stand on the issue and also remind children where the School stands on the issue. Parents should aim to be informed of the dangers of vaping and the resources previously provided are attached below for your assistance . Clear guidance from Paul Dillon and his organisation, DARTA, on tackling these conversations can be found at this link:

What should parents say when their teen says "But it's not smoking" when they find out they're vaping? (doingdrugs-darta.blogspot.com)

To remind families of the School’s position on this issue, we have a zero tolerance policy for the possession and use of all cigarettes on campus or at any School related event.

Swimming

Two of our students, Oliver McLaughlin and Hugh Gillham, are taking part in the 2021 Australian Swimming Trials in Adelaide later this week. This meet will attract Australia's best, as they compete to be nominated to the Australian team to compete at the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. We wish both boys all the very best for their events.

Support at Sport

It is always great to see many supporters at our various sporting fixtures. I was particularly impressed by the way in which our community respected the ceremony before the 1st XV game against St Gregory’s, Campbelltown. I shared my admiration for their approach with our students last week in Chapel and how proud I was to see such respect and appreciation for the importance of the event. However, there were elements of our support during the game that were not appropriate. The School will be reminded of the expectations before our next home game (17 July v St Pius') and I look forward to seeing teams being supported in the proper manner.

The ISA also provides guidelines for spectators and these can be found below:

  • Spectators must remember that this is “kids” school sport, let them have fun. It is not the World Cup.
  • Spectators are expected to be positive role models. They must behave respectfully and courteously towards players, coaches, match officials and other spectators.
  • Spectators are not to approach or address game officials or any of the opposing players, spectators or staff. If a spectator has a genuine concern, this needs to be presented to their own school official (for Kinross Wolaroi this should be Mr Priest) who will determine any action to be taken.
  • Unless invited onto a field/court, spectators must never encroach onto the field/court.
  • Barracking should be enthusiastic and positive, but not designed to heckle, denigrate or unsettle opponents. For example, barracking during a free throw or a kick at goal and so forth is always bad sportsmanship.
  • Sledging and negative comments are totally unacceptable. Good play by either team should be recognised by applause.
  • It is never right to express disapproval of a referee or umpire’s decision, irrespective of his/her age. The ISA is committed to a zero tolerance approach for any abuse towards officials through negative comments or actions.
  • Vocal support for any team should never encourage violence, rough or illegal play.
  • Visitors to the grounds should co-operate fully with any regulations or requests made by the host school, such as car parking, seating, dressing rooms and the placing of spectators. At all times visitors should leave the area tidy and free of rubbish when they leave.
  • Alcohol is not to be consumed at ISA fixtures.
