Athletics carnival

Joe Priest

After the finalization of the carnival last Thursday with the boys 1500m held on a very wintry lunch time, we now have our winning house. Results this year were exceptionally close. Congratulations to all students who have competed in the various Athletics events. The participation rates were outstanding across the carnival.

Congratulations to Ben Jones who etched his name into the program for the foreseeable future running a 2:02 for the 800m to break the previous record by more than 6 seconds. It will certainly take a good athlete to better this mark in the future.

The results from the carnival are as follows:

1st – Dean

2nd – McLachlan

3rd – Williams

4th – Richards

5th – Brown

6th – Gordon

7th – Blackman

8th – Douglas

Congratulations to Dean House on their continued domination of the KWS Athletics Carnival having now won six in a row.

Next term the KWS Athletics team will compete in the WAS, ISA and CIS athletic carnivals. Dates are as follows:

WAS – Monday 23rd August – Dubbo

ISA – Tuesday 7th September – Homebush

CIS – Tuesday 14th September - Homebush

Rugby

Matt Tink

A big congratulations to our Rugby boys who have been selected to represent ISA at the NSW Schoolboys Rugby Trials. Alex Brown, Patrick Hickman, Fletcher Doyle and Oscar Harding were all selected to play in the Opens teams, while Carter Kirby, Luke Dominello and Patrick Haydon were selected in the ISA U16s. Congratulations to our boys and best of luck.

KWS 1st XV vs St Augustine’s

Round 2 of the ISA competition saw the Two Blues head to Narrabeen to take on St Augustine’s. A solid training week was capped off with a good captain's run on Friday night and the entire squad was ready for a physical hit out. The game started well, with robust defence and good attacking structure through the middle of the field. A short lapse in concentration out wide was all it took though, and KWS was behind on the scoreboard 5 - nil. In what was a hotly contested first half, the men in blue and white fronted up physically and kept a strong Augustine’s to 10 points before an excellent intercept try by Jono Rasmussen put us within striking distance. An error on our line saw us concede a further try before we went into the half 7-15 down.

The effort and intent were clear in the second half, with 35 minutes of gutsy rugby played. Unfortunately, our execution inside the opposition's 22m let us down as we failed to capitalise on several fantastic scoring opportunities. A try to Patrick Hickman did provide a glimpse of a late run, but as we tired in defence, St Augustine’s ran in two length-of-the-field tries that put paid to any chance of victory. Final score 27-14. Improvements continue to be made and no one can question the effort. We will build on our processes over the next few weeks and look forward to meeting St Pius' at home in Term 3.

It was a great weekend of swimming from the KWS swim team who attended the Mountains & Plains Championships over the weekend of 5-6 June 2021.  This is the winter Championships and is swum in a 25 metre pool.

Twenty-two athletes attended and the team finished 2nd on the point score but just couldn’t match it with Bathurst who had a massive 55 swimmers, and the sheer weight of numbers. We had some great swims, with 95 life time best swims, some in excess of 17 seconds faster.

Age group champions were Thomas Karrasch - 8 years,  Edwina Waterman -13 years, Mercede Cornellus-Feltus - 17 years, Thomas Pell - 15 years and Ethan Crisp - 19 years.   Mercede was also female distance swimmer of the meet.

Some of the notable results:

  • Thomas Karrasch - with five first places and three PBs and a MPS record; his brother, Will, got a PB in every event including a massive 27 second improvement in the 100 backstroke
  • Edwina Waterman finished with 5 golds and 7 PB.  Mercede C/F won all her twelve races and broke 3 MPS records
  • Kyla Brown medalled in 11 of her 12 events and swam 6 life time bests
  • Will Diener won two medals from fantastic swims
  • Alex Karrasch - 7 swims for 7 PBs - great work
  • Chloe McGilvray - swam tough all weekend for three bronzes and 6 PBs
  • Eloise McMiles - 6 swims, 6 1st places, 6 PBs
  • Tom Pell - 8 swims, five 1sts,  a 2nd and two 3rds, every swim a PB
  • Methodical Max Keown, scored big points for the club with his 4 second places.
  • Lazo Jalal and Will Garard raced fast, Lazo finishing with two 2nd and two 3rd, Will with five top ten finishes, great underwater off the walls
  • Winning a medal in every event he swam, Tommaso C/F swam the house down and finished with 9 PBs one of 32 seconds!!!!
  • Welcome back to Tim Lowther who swam PBs all weekend; his sister, Grace,  finished with a bag of silver, 6 in total
  • Matt Lowther continues to grind away his PBs with 7 new ones.  Matt finished with two gold and seven silver
  • The old water log, Ethan Crisp, made a splash with three 1st a silver and two bronze.
  • Special mention to Oscar McLaughlin for turning up for the relays, injured at throw and giggle.

We roll on this week with a couple going to Canberra in preparation for NSW Country in two weeks. Hugh Gillham and Ollie McLaughlin travel to Adelaide this week to compete in the Australian swimming trials for the Olympic Games

NSW All Schools - 28 May

The KWS swim team achieved some outstanding results at the NSW All Schools swimming championships on Friday 28th May.

Ollie McLaughlin, Zac Lewis, Hugh Gilham and William Diener swam an amazing race in the 17 yrs and over boys medley relay, winning silver against hugely competitive Sydney schools in a time of 1.50.85. A great way for the boys in Year 12 to finish off their school swimming careers.

In individual events, Ollie McLaughlin won gold medals in the boys 17 years and over 100 backstroke (57.21) and the 50 backstroke (new PB time and NSW All schools record of 26.36). Mercede Cornelius-Feltus won bronze in the girls 17 years and over 200 fly in a time of 2.28.17 and came 5th in the 400 IM in a time of 5.25.6. Kyla Brown achieved 6th place in the 15 years girls 50 breaststroke in a time of 36.78. The team will continue competing into winter, starting with the Olympic trials for Ollie and Hugh in early June.

The whole team will also compete at the NSW country short course championships in Sydney later in the month

KWS Football Report

Katie Cutcliffe

1st XI

This year the First XI is comprised of students from Year 10-12. There are a wide range or personalities that five rounds in have become a close-knit team who are working their way towards the semi-finals. They may be a long way off, but the team is starting to play some beautiful football and are an emerging force who are gaining a great reputation amongst the local teams. With only a third of the season complete the team is in fine fettle. Congratulations to Griff Robison for his appointment to Captain of Football in 2021. Good luck to the team for the rest of the season.

2nd XI

The KWS 2nd XI head into the holiday break with an impressive 5 wins from 6 starts in the Orange and District Football Association Opens competition. After opening the season with a hard fought 3-0 victory over Cudal, the 2nds have displayed enthusiasm, grit and teamwork to put them in a strong position for the rest of the season. With a mix of players both male and female from Years 10-12, a hallmark of the team’s performances to date has been its ability to communicate and work together on the pitch. In particular, strong defensive efforts, led by captain and centre back Courtney Wright, have laid the platform for the attacking players to shine in the opening rounds.

The results to date are as follows:

KWS v Cudal – Win 3-0 (Goals: Levi 2, Sharpe 1)

KWS v Waratah FC - Win 7-1 (Goals: Levi 3, Noble 3, Horne 1)

KWS v Barnies Brighouse – Win 6-2 (Goals: Sharpe 3, Doyle 2, Noble 1)

KWS v Barnies Brighouse- Win 4-1 (Goals: Noble 2, Southwell 1, Levi 1)

KWS v Barnies Denly Loss 2-3 (Goals: Williams 2)

KWS v Waratah FC- Win 5-1 (Noble 3, Sharpe 1, Southwell 1)

KWS United

Saturday 5, June saw the fog clear to produce perfect playing conditions at Sir Jack Brabham Park. Kinross United continues to show improved skill and team cohesiveness on the field. Heath Robinson and Georgia Mudford swapped positions for the game. Georgia was strong in goal with three early saves and Heath showing strong leadership further down the field. Notable mentions include runs on goal by James Cooper, Eli Cunningham and Hugo Reynolds. Despite improvements, Barnies prevailed with a win 8-0.

Hockey Report Week 8

KWS 1sts vs Orange City – Won 2-1

This week the KWS Firsts XI came away with a very well-deserved win. Faced with the team on top of the ladder, we fought hard against an experienced team with a goal keeper who is exceptional hard to score against. Jemma Leulf controlled well from the centre distributing the ball and Isabelle Medway worked hard to get herself into space. A powerful goal from Phoebe Litchfield put us in front and effective sideline passages from Taylah Hobbs kept the pressure on the opposition. An Anna Westcott goal was the decider, and the girls were all in high spirits as we secured our first win of the season. This game was a great reward for all our hard work and efforts at training so far. Congratulations!

KWS Knicks v Molong – Won 4-3

KWS Knicks had a very exciting and close game on Friday night, coming away with a tight 4-3 victory. The Molong Killer Whales team provided some strong competition, making for some tough hockey for our back players and goalie, Lil Pearce. An amazing performance by Amy Pearce in both halves of the game, stopping the Molong team from scoring on multiple occasions.

The tight game proceeded with KWS scoring first by the great teamwork between Isi Pearce, Charlie Swift and Sienna Wilkin. The Molong team were quick to follow, leaving the second half at 2-2. The Knicks team showed great commitment throughout the game and converted two more goals which they carried throughout the remainder of the second half. Overall a very exciting game and a great display of perseverance and teamwork.

KWS Lakers vs Canobolas Storm Won 3-2

KWS Lakers played an excellent game of hockey on Friday night against a strong Canobolas team. Jessica Taylor did an excellent job in the goals and Zoe Harmer and Jemima Scammell were hard to beat in the back line of defence. The Lakers went into half time with a 2-1 lead with goals scored by Rhys Jones and Kymani Astill.

In the second half the Lakers were focused on marking tighter across the field and trying to spread the ball wide in attack. Players all rotated through different positions and had short stints on the bench, a welcome break from the wind and rain! Canobolas hit back with their second goal. Lakers continued to mark well and really kept themselves in the game, scored a third goal, dug deep and held on to win. Well done to all players!

KWS Spurs

The KWS Spurs are coming ahead in leaps and bounds, improving every game and now experiencing the delights of our first two wins of the season! The girls have been working hard together to improve their strength on the ball, tackling, finding space in attack and close marking in defence. These skills have combined to see the girls celebrate two wins from two games as we celebrate with a long weekend rest. Mention must go to Daisy and Eva who have been our goalies for the last two games, as well as our rotating fullbacks Lucy M, Jess and Claire. The girls are always quick to the ball and their strength in tackling continues to impress. Our midfielders Maisy, Siannabel, Ava, Claudia, Annabelle and Lily have worked tirelessly in both attack and defence, while our strikers McKenzie, Lucy R, Alloway and Poppy are combining space and sharp passes to give themselves the best chance of scoring goals for their team. I am excited to see where the girls can take the next round of games in Term 3, look out opposition, here we come!

KWS Raptors vs Molong Skunks – lost 2-1

Our games on the 4th of June took place in the cold and rain. One of our players was away sick but everyone pulled together and played with grit and determination. Our first game was against the Molong Skunks. It was a hard game with the Skunks demonstrating a lot of hard hits. The Raptors adapted well and showed courage in closing with the opposing players and defending well. The purposeful way they played in the second half was impressive. Nevertheless, we lost 2 goals to 1 despite having some unfulfilled opportunities. Abby Kerr played goalie again and did a fine job. Although we are sharing the role Abby stepped up for a fourth time and her skills get better every week. Hannah Jones, Katie Ivey and Clare Wood defended extremely well all night.

KWS Raptors vs Canobolas – won 4-2

Our second game was against Canobolas on the Davis field. Our forwards and midfielders demonstrated some long fast runs. Sophie Luelf, Zoe Wood, Lulu Clinton and Georgia Miller all played with skill in attack. They were supported well by Ruby de Vries, Zoe McKay, Nancy Straw, and Hannah Jones in the midfield. We won with a score of 4-2. All the girls did a great job persevering with the rain and cold. I was very proud of their determination and good sportsmanship.

Cavaliers

Well unfortunately the plundering has stopped as the team first became becalmed with two draws and then last night the ship ran aground with our first defeat of the season. Facing a very masculine foe, the girls found the pace and heavy hitting difficult to adjust to. Down 1 - 0 courtesy of a solid short corner, and with storm clouds gathering, the Cavs were valiant to the end, with many opportunities just going wide of the mark (even two after the final whistle). Our novice players stood up well with Bella lasting most of the game and Bree having her strongest game of the season so far. Taylah, Phoebe and Tara were outstanding as usual and Phoebe Neville was making the most of her ‘go-go gadget’ arms to attack when she got the opportunity. Hopefully, we can get the wind back in our sails after the extended break and set a course for the finals.

KWS Heat

Heat played well attacking in intervals, unfortunately when they unable to maintain the intensity throughout the game. Each time the standard dropped slightly the opposition capitalised . Overall this was a good game and demonstrated the improvement that Heat have made.  All of girls gave 100% and we went down to a better team on the evening.

KWS Bulls vs OAGS – Won 3-1

The Bulls were ready for the top of the table clash against OAGS. The U18’s competition is extremely tight with five teams all on equal points on top of the ladder. This made the win crucial to keep the Bulls inside the top four.

Bulls came out with plenty of enthusiasm and energy. James Glasson, Charlie Williams and Fergus Connick worked tirelessly in the midfield. Some quality passing from the Bulls left Charlie Williams free in the goal circle. He made no mistake giving the Bulls an early 1-0 lead. Shortly after Harry Priest scored off a short corner variation to have the Bulls up 2-0 at half time.

In the second half a lack of marking allowed OAGS back into the game with a goal despite the best efforts of James Crisp in goals. The Bulls then survived a scare as OAGS missed an opportunity from right in front of our goal.

Bulls spread the ball wide to Saxon Buckley who managed to finish off with some good individual play and secure the winning goal. This now puts the Bulls on top of the ladder.

KWS Hornets vs KWS Mavericks – Won 3-0

The Hornets have improved ten-fold this season with our first win of the season on Monday against the Mavericks. Kate Davidson played goalie for the first time and made sure nothing else got past her after an unlucky stroke in the first half. Veteran Josie Clarke led the pack scoring multiple goals and made crucial turnovers. Lucy Gilbert and Annabel Edgley were lethal in attack and gave 110% the entire game. At training, we focused on passing accuracy and making leads, both of which showed in our game on Monday.

Special mention to Liv Fergusson and Liv Fredrikson who are improving each week, as well as Bridie Walsh, who scored her first goal.

KWS Warriors vs KWS Mavericks – Won 3-0

The KWS Warriors were rightfully jubilant with their first victory and goals for the season. Sally Carter made a swift introduction following her late arrival from orchestra, scoring our first goal for the season within seconds of getting on the field. This was followed up by two superb goals from Josie Taylor and Xanthe St Clair, both of which were excitedly celebrated by the Warriors. Molly Smith continued her tenacious approach, with several key interceptions and surging runs through the middle. She was ably supported by Annabelle Woods in the midfield, with Annabelle demonstrating her committed approach in chasing down multiple opposition opportunities, and in driving the ball forward for Cailin McKay in attack.

KWS Warriors vs KWS Thunder – Lost 3-1

The KWS Warriors played their best game of the season against the heavily favoured Thunder. Although the girls lost on the night, they can be very proud of their efforts in keeping the almost first-team opposition to a low score. Abby Rolfe was the player of the evening with a stellar performance in goal having only become a goalie this season. She kept out several probing short-corner opportunities and was a thorn in the side of the highly skilled Thunder attackers. Georgia Sweetapple and Chloe Robertson continued their fine form, combining superbly for a length of the field goal that took the Thunder girls by surprise.

KWS Mavericks vs KWS Warriors – Lost 3-0

Mavericks played our strongest and best game yet on Monday night. An excellent start had Mavericks down 1-0 at half time but with plenty of attacking play we were well in the game. During the break the team had skittles and sour patch kids to build team spirit and then talked some tactics. Mavericks came out in the second half and worked together as a team and managed to get a penalty stroke, resulting in our first goal of the season, scored by Hannah Leisk. Lily McFeeters performed admirably in goal for the whole of the second half backed up by the awesome Anna Robinson. The Mavericks played well overall in the last game of term 2 with Emma Livingstone cheering in support all game. It has demonstrated that we are competitive and just need to continue working on some tactics at training.
