Co-curricular

Mr Joe Priest, Acting Head of Co-curricular

Co-curricular Report

The students have been busy over the last two weeks in their cocurricular pursuits. The diverse opportunities available really give the students of Kinross Wolaroi the opportunity to excel in so many different areas. It is fantastic as staff to watch the work students put into their areas of passion and see the rewards that they reap as young adults.

Freya Neville & Bella Scammell have worked exceptionally hard over the course of this term. They have been training for the Rowing World Cup Regatta in South Australia. We wish the girls all the best at this event. A fantastic reward for the years of hard work they have put into the sport of rowing.

Hugh Gillham and Oliver McLaughlin are also heading to South Australia. Another two students who have given an extremely large amount of time to the cocurricular program. They have managed to qualify for the Australian Swim Championships held in Adelaide. We wish them all the best as they have their first attempt at qualifying for an Australian Men’s Swim Team.

Last week the Cross Country team travelled to the Sydney International Equestrian Centre to compete in the AICES cross country. The team of 34 acquitted themselves very well on the day and were excellent ambassadors for our school. Special mention to Sophie Martin who finished 2nd overall in the U16 girls and William Karrasch who finished 3rd overall in the 12 years boys. Good luck to the 10 students who have qualified for the NSWCIS event held Thursday 10 June.

Well done to our debaters who have been busy competing in Round 3 and 4 of the HICES debating over the last two weeks. They have achieved excellent results. On Tuesday 8 June our school hosted Scots All Saints College and Macquarie Anglican College. The Wolaroi House common room provided an excellent venue for this event. Congratulations to our debaters who won four out of their six debates on the day.

The Chess team competed in Round 4 of the Interschool Chess Tournament last week. We sent four players - Will Rawson, Max Ringbauer, Kajan Kandeepan and Krishan Kandeepan over to James Sheahan High School to compete. All four games were close and well played by both sides, however, Kinross Wolaroi School ended up coming out with the win 3-1, only losing our Board 1 by the slimmest of margins. We now go on to compete against Lithgow High School next week.

A fantastic five days was had by the 34 students who made up our equestrian team at the North West Equestrian Expo in Coonabarabran, supported by the Thoroughbred Industry Careers, with over 600 students competing. On offer over the five days were 12 different equestrian disciplines ranging from eventing, sporting, team penning, dressage and showjumping to name a few.

The highlight of the team events is the polocrosse, with the finals held under lights and the Kinross team of Jock Stuart, Zoe Stevenson and Ryan Weston taking out the Division 1 trophy in a convincing fashion, defeating Calrossy 5-1.

Ryan Weston also picked up numerous ribbons in the sporting events, gaining him reserve champion sporter in his age group. With his success over other events, he was named Champion boy for the 13 years age group overall.

Fantastic overall school results. I would like to send a big thank you to all the parents that made our camp such a wonderful place to be, the students who represented the school with such enthusiasm, pride and participated in the spirit with which sport should be played and Callum Wald for leading the way in that school pride and spirit.

CWA Public Speaking

Kinross Wolaroi students recently competed at the CWA Central Western Group Public Speaking Competition against several schools in the Bathurst and Orange region. Toby Gough, Year 10, is to be congratulated for winning the Year 9 and 10 section of the competition presenting an interesting speech on the need for a second language, showing the benefits of learning the language of our First Nations people. Shubhang Nagar was awarded second place, with his motivational speech on the topic of ‘An opportunity missed’ speaking of the importance of taking opportunities when they come our way to benefit society.

In the Senior Year 11/12 section Stephanie Wong of Year 10 presented her views on the topic ‘Leaving the gate open’. Her speech was inspirational in its lesson on the importance of not being afraid to take chances and rise to challenges to achieve.

These three students are to be congratulated on the time they dedicated to researching, preparing, and practicing their speeches to be admirable representatives of the Kinross Wolaroi community.

Both Toby and Shubhang will now progress to the Inter Group Speaking Competition which will take place at Trundle on 22 June.

KWS hosts 4th round of HICES debating

Tuesday 8 June saw Kinross Wolaroi host the fourth round of the HICES debating competition. The schools in attendance were Scots All Saints Bathurst, Blue Mountains Grammar and Macquarie Anglican Grammar Dubbo. In total there were 22 participating teams, from Year 6 to Year 12. Dr Parry opened the day’s proceedings with a prayer and a welcome to our visitors. The day then proceeded with the Junior and Middle round of competition, followed by the Middle and Open Division. The topics for these rounds were based on human rights. The Middle Division debates concentrated on the rights of ‘school bullies’ while the Senior and Open debates discussed the power and intervention of the United Nations. Kinross Wolaroi won four of the six debates in which they competed. Wins were awarded to the following teams: KWS Junior team, Middle KWS A’s, Senior KWS B’s and the KWS Opens team. The following students were awarded in the top three best debaters for their performance in their debates. KWS Opens - Eleanor Armstrong, Stephanie Wong; Senior Division - KWS A Jemima McLeod, KWS B Annabelle Van Wyk, George Hogg, Sala Ormes Smith; Middle Division - KWS A Greta Sobotta, KWS B Alice Scholte

HICES Debating - 1 June

The Kinross Wolaroi debating team travelled to Scots All Saints College in Bathurst on Tuesday 1 June to compete in the third round of the HICES Public Speaking Competition.

The day was enjoyable and competitive for all in attendance. Four teams competed on the day, with the Middle KWS B and Senior KWS B both winning their debates.

While the KWS A in both Middle and Senior Divisions were defeated, the feedback from the adjudicators commended them on their strength of argument. They now look forward to the Fourth round which will be held on the Kinross Wolaroi Campus in June.

Annual Camp Kayaking - Cadet Activity

Whilst Annual Camp is a long distant memory, these pictures of the paddle activity on Lake Endeavour show one of the important development activities undertaken. Each of the Year 8 Cadet platoons which came through the activity were exceptional!

The staff involved provided advice and gave demonstrations on general water and kayaking hazards, paddling technique, team work and skill development during the course of the week. There was also opportunity to view a number of different native flora and fauna species on our daily paddle and also discussions on catchment areas and water storage infrastructure for rural communities. In addition, we ensured that there was time set aside to play some Kayak Netball and Rugby to further develop the skills taught.

A great activity for our students and a great team of staff involved in all aspects of its delivery.
