Multicultural club

Across term 2, the Multicultural Club planned for various activities aimed to promote awareness, and appreciation of diverse cultures through art, movies, food and connections. We have a group of students who help run and plan the activities. So far we have had friendship bracelets, henna and origami workshops. Activities and workshops have been planned for the next terms in hopes that we will all be back onsite! Please keep an eye out for future Compass Newsfeeds and notice boards for the latest updates.

Dragon boat festival

This traditional festival is celebrated every year on the fifth day of the fifth month of the traditional lunar calendar in China. The festival’s origin was to commemorate a famous scholar Qu Yuan who was one the loyal ministers of King Chu in the 3rd Century BC. He passed away in Milou River and people would ride the dragon boat and feed rice to the fish in the river to ward off evil spirits as well as the fish from eating his body.

People usually eat zongzi, a form of sticky rice wrapped into a pyramid shape by bamboo leaves with either sweet or savoury fillings. Although this memorial festival originates from China, other countries such as Japan, South Korea, Vietnam and Singapore also celebrate this festival with different features such as dragon boat racing and different fillings inside their zongzi.

We celebrated this festival with our international students this year providing them with traditional zongzi with pork and chestnut fillings!
