Grade 2 Fortnightly Snapshot
Term 3, Weeks 1 & 2
Dear Parents and Carers
We have ended Term 2 with the market stalls where students have created products based on their market research, set up a stall complete with advertising, then sold their products. They also have had the opportunity to buy products that their peers have made. It has been wonderful to see the students so engaged and be creative. Congratulations on a successful term 2!
We look forward to an exciting Term 3 beginning with our unit on using water.
In reading we have continued our focus on understanding the forms of persuasion. They students have learnt how to identify and analyse persuasive advertising in print and video as well as persuasive essays.
Next term, we will begin looking at the structure and language features of procedural texts, including flow charts and diagrams. Students will follow procedural texts to conduct various science experiments.
We have finished this term by learning the spelling rules on when to use /ai/ or /ay/ and /oi/ or /oy/.
Next term, you may hear your child refer to 'The FSZL Gang'. This spelling rule is where we
usually double f, s, z and l if they:
- come after a single vowel
- are at the end of a one-syllable word
e.g. fluff boss buzz fill
Learning the codes will help students with their reading and spelling. Here are links to videos where students can see, say and hear the codes.
We will commence Term 3 with a focus on editing. Students will learn to reread their writing to find sentence beginnings and endings and then use capital letters and punctuation to finish the sentences. Students will also apply their knowledge of text structure when editing.
We will also be teaching flow charts and procedural texts. Students will learn to plan and write a sequence of ideas and events that the reader can follow.
This week grade 2 learnt about Australian money in preparation for the opening of their market stalls. The students understood that they had to be able to count money amounts and sometimes give change for their shop to be successful. They have been engaged and keen to learn about this topic. Over the holidays we encourage you to involve your child in real-life transactions and experiences with money. This will build on and consolidate what they have learnt in the classroom.
In the first week of term 3, we will be learning about capacity and volume. It would be helpful if the students could bring in one container to use in capacity lessons. This can be any sized container and does not need to have measurements on it.
In term 3 we will begin our next unit under the theme, Sharing the Planet. Our central idea is "Using water responsibly supports life".
The students will explore:
* Please ensure your child reads each night.
* Refer to the student planner for the weekly homework.
*Use the links in this newsletter to go to the codes videos.
*Please could the students bring in one container to use in capacity lessons. This can be any sized container and does not need to have measurements on it.
