Kitchen Update

It has been a busy couple of weeks in the kitchen with students making a variety of goods.

It continues to be a great pleasure to watch the children skills grow and their willingness to continue to taste new and unknown foods.

Mrs Biscan bought in an unusual fruit for them to taste. It is called a “pepino” and they are home grown by her father in law.

The children described it as a cross between and apple and a cantaloupe. It is certainly different and we have now planted  a tree at school for future harvesting.

A big shout out this week to my kitchen volunteer Bev. Her help this week in the kitchen classes in my absence has been much appreciated.

The students in grade 3/4 have been  exploring different ways to use pumpkin, along with revisiting Salad of the Imagination using what is available and in season. This also calls for them to experiment with making a salad dressing using only herbs and what we have in the pantry. Their creations have been delicious.

Our junior students  continue to learn new skills and explore more new foods and flavours.

Last week they created “sushi’ sandwiches with a twist, no seaweed in sight. They used bread. Ask them how?

This week they created a yummy cinnamon yoghurt dip to use with a selection of fruit they cut and placed onto skewers, Kebabs with a difference.

We still have a selection of pickles, chutneys and preserves available for purchase through the school office. Priced from $2-$5. All proceeds support our program.
