Good News!
Giant pandas are no longer classified as ‘endangered’- Hannah Benhassine, Year 11
According to the World Wild Fund, giant pandas are officially on the road to recovery thanks to conservation efforts. The giant panda, a species native to South Central China, has been reducing in numbers since the 1980s. The universally adored creature is crucial in ensuring biodiversity in the forests throughout China. Finally after 30 years, through various efforts such as creating giant panda reserves and ensuring local communities adopt sustainable practices, the International Union for Conservation of Nature has changed the panda’s status on the Red List of Threatened Species. Much more work has to be done to ensure the ongoing protection of giant pandas, but it definitely is a step in the right direction!
Britain’s Greenest Day Ever!- Harriet Turner-Browne, Year 9
Britain’s greenest day ever was just recently. On Easter Sunday in April this year, the U.K. experienced its highest use of renewable energy ever recorded due to windy conditions- 60% of energy provided by solar and wind! If you thought that was good, last week on Monday afternoon, the U.K. also set a new record for the day of most power produced by wind turbines. They generated a whopping 17.6GW of electricity equivalent to 48.5 per cent of the grid’s total supply. That’s over twice as much as what gas plants produced that day, at just 21%. Good things are coming, let’s hope Britain inspires many nations to follow in their footsteps and become carbon-neutral energy providers!
