Acting Principal’s Report

Year 7 2022 Information night

At this time every year grade 6 students and their families are making the important choice on which school to attend for year 7. To support these families we run our annual Information Night, which was once again held virtually.

The highlight as always was hearing from our students and their experiences of the year so far. Thanks to Ada Breach, India Buckley Jackman, Nova Karikari, Grace Cilia, and Annie Sadler for their amazing contribution to the night. I’d also like to acknowledge Simone Aloi, who gave us a great insight as a parent of an MGC student. Thanks also to Bridget Tellefson, Emily Miller and Rachel Robertson for their speeches on the night, to Stephanie Valencia for all of her work in organising the event, Beth Barrass for the video editing and to Anthony Keen for his IT and Webex troubleshooting.

Open Day

With the ongoing COVID19 pandemic impacting limits of people allowed on site, this year's open day was instead held over 3 days.

Over 1000 students and parents came through the college, and they were greatly impressed by the learning they saw in classrooms and the engagement of our students in the broader life of the school. As usual, our Junior Ambassadors were brilliant advocates for their school, and every student and parent left our school well informed and enthusiastic about the possibility of joining us in 2022.

A big thanks to our Public Relations Captains Jessica Bell, Hannah Benhassine, and Eve Wheeler for all of their training of the Junior Ambassadors, the JA's themselves for their brilliant work leading the tours, and to Stephanie Valencia, Rachel Robertson, Ella McDonald, and our fabulous office staff for their work in ensuring this was a successful event.

Athletics Carnival

This week, after multiple attempts, we unfortunately had to cancel our annual House Athletics Carnival.

I would like to thank our Sport Coordinator Kyle Monaghan for all of his work in getting this event ready to happen, and particularly for his flexibility and professionalism in creating alternative plans during multiple unexpected delays. A huge thanks to the PE/Health team who supported Kyle all the way through, and to our amazing staff who pulled together an engaging program of activities for the students who were at school for the day.

Students participated in activities like Yoga and dance competitions and took advantage of the time to explore all that our STEAM room had on offer. Our fantastic Enviro Team treated everybody to a sausage sizzle and fruit smoothies, and although we were disappointed the Athletics wasn’t able to run, a great day was still had by all.

Solar panels

We recently received a grant as part of the DET Greener Schools Initiative for the installation of Solar panels. The 26.6kw system added to our existing panels takes us up to 61.6kw, which will provide up to 16% of our schools' electricity consumption. For those of us that like data, this equates to a saving of 82 tonnes of Co2 emissions each year, and is the equivalent of planting approximately 1500 trees annually (a fabulous addition to the 250 plants we plant each Murnong day)

There will be another installation of solar panels as part of our Performing Arts Centre project, with every panel getting us closer to our goal of being carbon neutral. It goes to show that yet again MGC is setting the standard with our work towards a sustainable environment.

Acting Assistant Principal

As you will be aware from communications already sent to families, Year 8 Leader Shaunagh O’Connell has been promoted to acting Assistant Principal for the remainder of 2021. While Shaunagh is bringing her expertise to this role, it is wonderful to be able to promote Katelyn Walters to the role of Year 8 level Leader, and Brydie Murphy to the role of Assistant Year 8 level Leader.

I would like thank our wonderful community for your support and patience while we have finalised these appointments. We have an amazing team of staff here at MGC who are willing and passionate about supporting each and every student, and helping them to "Lead and Achieve"

Have a great week

Andrew
