Curriculum

Selamat Siang! Week 5 has come and passed so quickly as we delved into a plethora of fun and engaging learning activities and opportunities. We are very excited to share our classroom and school life over Education week with our families, grandparents and special people at the Art Show, during Open Night, and on Grandparents day over the upcoming week as we created personalised invitations.

In Literacy, we consolidated and extended our understanding of creating text connections through connecting real-world bigger issues like Sustainability through the Kapok Tree, recycling, sustainable changes over time through our homes, and the changing seasons in Australia to ourselves and the world as we read. We focused on using sentence starters including ‘the text says,' ‘this reminds me of’ and made deeper connections through using because statements.

In Writing, we slowly moved away from simple arguments to finding and creating strong reasons to support our opinions. We considered the audience's differing opinions and our strongest three reasons to persuade the audience to change their minds for a range of different topics as we planned and drafted some persuasive speeches. We were also introduced to a range of persuasive strategies including using strong openers, rhetorical questions, facts, and a call to action to up-level our work.

In Maths, we jumped onboard the Maths carousel as we explored the links between addition and subtraction through strategies including making, naming, and renaming our vertical addition and subtraction number sentences. We value seeing our number sentences through materials including our counters and bundles, to use our Hundred, Ten and Ones charts and number lines. A highlight was when we challenged ourselves to balance a range of equations using the language ‘this is the same as’. We found it very tricky to identify the missing number!

In Science, we discussed the changes all around us when the day turns to night. We went on an exploration as we learned about Earth’s rotation and how the moon never really disappears in the daytime. In Guided Inquiry, students jumped into a discussion about reusing objects around their homes to reduce waste and to find a new purpose to ‘rubbish’ items. We are very excited to use our materials to make new things next week in Week 6.
