Independence Centre

Curriculum

Selamat siang!

When it rains it pours in the Independence Centre, after the excellent effort of our Grade 3 students the week before we kept it coming with an Assessment Week for the whole of the Independence Centre. We are all proud of the efforts made by all students as they rose to the challenge with bravery and persistence. Although we got up to much more than just some assessments. For starters we had our Melbourne Museum Excursion to prepare for.

In guided Inquiry, we have been investigating ecosystems and the different roles organisms play within them. We have explored the impacts we have on our environment along with the impacts of different types  of erosion. A highlight was as we put into practice our mapping skills across the school in teams, thanks Miss Malloy. Students are going to use what they have learned at school in combination with what they find at the Melbourne Museum to begin their own inquiry into organisms and their ecosystems.

In Reading, we got our Sherlock hats on and practiced our inferencing skills together. Inferencing is when we use reasoning and evidence to form our own conclusions.  We focused on using what we had read from the text in combination with our own prior knowledge to form an inference. As you and your child read each night it would be a fantastic opportunity to practice making inferences together.

In Maths, students explored measurement with a focus on length and perimeter. Together we made sure we understood the tools we would use and how to use them accurately before we began stretching our measurement skills to measure a wide range of regular and irregular polygons. To end the week we challenged ourselves by creating our names with polygons with a total perimeter within 5 centimeters of a metre. A perfect perimeter problem to practice what we had learned.

Our 3/4 Winter Gala Day is close approaching (3rd of June) and we have been hard at it learning to work as a team and build our skills. In order to run this event we are looking for parents who could offer their time to volunteer to support our students both in practice leading up to the Gala Day and on the Gala Day itself. If you are interested and able to help our students please let your child’s teacher know ASAP. We have our last practice this Friday the 28th of May between 12:30 and 1:30om and the Winter Gala Day will be held on Thursday the 3rd of June. Thank you to Lisa and Anthony , along with Stanley who helped out at school last week, it was very much appreciated by all.
