Term 2 has seen some great excursions for the senior PE students at Box Hill HS. Our year 10 PE classes were involved in a circus workshop for their Skill acquisition unit and the year 12 PE classes were involved in a Biomechanics incursion to support their units work. In our junior HPE classes, the year 9 students have also been involved in writing and completing a fitness training program, which has seen some excellent results.

Year 10 PE

During our unit on Skill Acquisition students were given the opportunity to learn and/or refine their circus skills. RUCCIS Circus School visited Box Hill HS at the start of Term 2 and held a session where students could apply their knowledge on the cognitive, associative and autonomous stages of learning. Students attempted plate spinning, juggling, diablo, devil sticks, hula hooping and even had a short go at balancing on a unicycle.

Year 12 PE

Biomechanics is perceived as one of more difficult aspects of Year 12 Physical Education, but thanks to the METs Biomechanics Incursion, our students were able to have a real-world practical application which simplified these biomechanical principles. Luke from METs did a fantastic job at breaking down these concepts through his clear explanations and the use of great technology.

This included an accelerometer within a baseball, which was used to demonstrate how the summation of momentum can increase the velocity on a ball. Additionally, a force plate was used to demonstrate how time can be increased during a landing, to reduce the impulse and therefore risk of injury on an athlete, as shown in these pictures. We thank Luke and the team at METs for providing our students with this great learning opportunity!

Year 9 HPE

Students in year 9 were completing a unit on the Key Areas of Fitness during term 1. Within this unit students learnt about the main body systems and how they were impacted when doing exercise. Classes were then taught about how to create training programs to achieve certain adaptation to their bodies and reflect on what they achieved. The quality of students programs was really high with an snapshot here from Luvleen Chand 9I.
