Class of 2020 Valedictory Night
The Year 12, class of 2020 were finally able to hold their valedictory night which was unfortunately postponed last year as a result of the Covid pandemic.
The event was held on Thursday May 13th at the San Remo Ballroom in Carlton North and was a great success. It was lovely to reconnect with our past students to see what our 2020 graduates were up to after we last said our farewells in December and to celebrate their successes during what was a very challenging year for all of us; students, families and education staff. Congratulations once again to all!
Year 10
Managed Individual Pathways (MIP) Interviews
Almost all the Year 10 and 11 students have completed their Managed Individual Pathways (MIPs) interviews this term. The purpose of the MIPs interview is to review the student’s pathways plan and discuss their future pathways. The MIPs counsellor helps students identify their educational goals, employment goals and the different pathways that they can travel along to achieve these goals.
MIPs aims to help students to:
Exams
In the last week of this semester, the Year 10 students had their first experience in sitting exams and understanding the work required to complete them. In preparation for the exams, the Year 10 teachers have taught the students revision techniques and strategies specific for their subject as well as key skills needed for the exam.
One of the key skills Year 10 students have practiced is retrieving relevant information which will strengthen their memory pathways for future uses. Working on this skill will be useful for them for future exams in Year 11 and Year 12. The exams also provided a fit-for-purpose opportunity for students to demonstrate what they know in the specific subject area.
Year 11
Year 11 students have had a busy term with a number of events. Students have had two sessions presented by external providers to develop their study skills. One focused on preparing for English Written Assessments and the General Achievement Test as well as another session on general study skills presented by Elevate.
We’ve also been extremely impressed with the Year 11 students demonstrating agency and strong voice to enhance their schooling experience. A group of Year 11 students were behind a movement to make positive change in the areas of respect and consent. The Senior Team and Wellbeing Teams look forward to working with students to implement the Box Hill HS plan for increasing awareness and education for respect and safety of all students.
In other news, it is wonderful to see Year 11 students garner support to run a charitable Year 11 Social event in term 3. Students are working with Headspace to raise awareness for youth mental health and providing proactive support for others.
The Year 11 Social will take place on Friday 13th of August at the Karralyka Centre. More information about this will be posted on Compass to parents as we get planning underway.
Thank you also to the Year 11 Leaders who continue to advocate student ideas and support those around them.
Year 12
It’s been a bit quieter over in Year 12 and the reason for that is the impressive amount of study and preparation students have been doing for their SACs and SATs to finish off Unit 3.
That said, our prefects have been busily planning the school talent show for Term 3 while the formal committee worked extremely hard earlier this term to plan the Year 12 Formal (postponed to July 16th). We’ve also had our Year 12 students star in the school production or oversee the lighting and sound as part of the tech crew as well as having a number of students participate in different inter-school sports. It’s great to see that our Year 12s appreciate the need to maintain a balance at Year 12 and continue to pursue extra-curricular activities.
There are a few important dates to keep in mind for next term. There will be a number of Connect Revision lectures happening in the last week of term and first week of the Term 3 holidays. There will also be practice exams running in the second week of the school holidays. These exams are the best indicator to students of how they are going in a subject and where to focus their preparation in the lead-up to the VCAA exams. We ask that all students attend these practice exams to give themselves a full exam experience.
