Principal's Message
It is only week two and already so much has happened at MGSC! Last Saturday and Sunday the Aerobics Teams were competing at the Regionals in Rowville. Hayley Dureau and I had the pleasure of visiting them to watch them over the weekend to see them compete.
The teams are coached by past students of MGSC and so there is a special connection created which is fueled by their desire to give something back to the college long after they have left. What this demonstrates to me is how important the culture of a school is. It is the sense of belonging, encouragement, courage and acceptance that is handed down from one year level to the next which is almost tangible. It really makes me feel so proud to be the Principal of this wonderful school. The Aerobics Program is led by Tess Molina who makes all of this magic happen. Many of our teams will be going to the State Competition where I look forward to watching them perform on the day. My heart-felt thanks to the coaches and Tess who have coached and mentored the girls and my congratulations to all of those students who competed in the competition.
On Monday night we held our “Show and Tell” evening where we invited prospective parents and their children to hear from our students about our wonderful school. There was a huge turnout on the evening which is terrific to see. I think that the word is out that approximately 50% of our students come from outside our local area. As the only government girls’ school in the South Eastern Suburbs, we have an important role to play in providing families with access to a high performing single-sex educational environment that is an affordable alternative to private single-sex schools.
Detta Gordon, Assistant Principal, was responsible for organising and coordinating the “Show and Tell”. There were many hightlights in the evening starting with the Symphonic Band who played the opening numbers and the performances throughout the evening. We also were able to see Tabitha from Year 8 performing a solo from the Addams Family, the Aerobics performances and last but certainly not least, the students who shared their stories about the various subject areas at the school. Student voice and agency was very visible on the evening which is exactly what we want to encourage at MGSC as we want our students to be empowered now and into the future beyond as they progress beyond our school gates.
We have also moved our flagpoles to the garden in front of the Nina Carr Performing Arts Centre that faces Charman Road so that the Australian, Victorian, Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Pride flag can be on display throughout the year. We are a school that celebrates diversity and inclusion in all of its forms and is a proud government school, and I am very pleased to be able to share this visual representation of pride with the wider community.
Best wishes
