WORKING BEE

Progress on our Bushtucker garden and meeting place.

Over the past two months, we have made rapid progress thanks to the help of our fabulous student Enviro team, the donation of time and a machine to clear the area, and then our wonderful parents, students, and even their siblings on our working bee day. We achieved sleeper edging along the whole garden, mulching around our new table tennis tables, and laying the edging within the bushtucker space. A wet and misty day- yet the gang worked happily to achieve all of this and more. Thank you so much to those who came- we really appreciate your commitment to our community.

We also really appreciate the donation of funds to buy plants for this area from others in our community. We will keep you all informed of what we buy and how it is growing.

We have the area now edged and the garden beds almost all edged as well, so we are ready for planting. Much discussion has been had on what to plant and where to plant it. Whilst we have an overall garden plan for the shape of paths and beds and some particular fruiting and flowering natives, the rest is developing organically as our students learn about the possible plants and consider the habitats we want to develop.

Along with the work in the garden our Enviro Team are also involved in a project with Birdlife Australia. This involves learning about our native birds, doing an audit of what birds we currently have on our college grounds and then working to improve and increase habitat for those birds that we would like to attract as well as those birds already here. Again, a great project for all in our community.

Stay tuned for the massive planting that is about to happen- 30th August we will be having a planting morning in lieu of Plant a Tree Day.

DUTY STUDENTS

Being a duty student is a great way to find things about the school that most student wouldn’t know about.  It is also a great way to start conversations with teachers you wouldn’t usually talk to. If you get paired up with someone you wouldn’t usually partner up with it can open up a large range of opportunities to make long lasting friendships.

The best part is probably getting your reward at the end.  Overall, this program is a great way to discover more about the school and a great way to meet new people
