Grade 1 and 2
Term 1
What a fabulous Term 1. Some of the highlights have been our sports clinics - we have enjoyed tennis, basketball, netball and hockey. We have gone on adventures to the CFA and our community walk and we were visited by Manningham council for a lesson on FOGO and how to use our bins at home. Wishing everyone a happy and safe Easter and we look forward to a busy Term 2.
In Reader's Workshop we have been focussing on our comprehension strategies; summarising what we read, identifying the main parts of a story, identifying the main characters, setting, problems and solutions and learning about literal and inferential meaning. Congratulations on those students who have started reading for the Premier's Reading Challenge! Teachers will be keeping an eye on how you're tracking and there may be some prizes in store at the end of the challenge
In Writer's Workshop we have been learning about narratives. A story needs a "who, what, when, where and why" and we have been practising writing our own stories and publishing them. Grade 2's are looking forward to typing, printing and illustrating their stories when we return to school in Term 2.
In Maths this term, students have been working hard with place value. Students are learning to read, recognise, model and order numbers up to 100 and beyond for Grade 1 and up to 1000 and beyond for Grade 2. We have loved exploring numbers with different hands on activities, solving puzzles, breaking codes and students continue to love the place value song.
Throughout Term 1, Grade 1 and 2 have learnt about Communities. We have looked at communities starting from our families, to our classroom, our school, to Warrandyte, Australia and beyond. This unit has provided us with many opportunities to understand our roles in our community and the roles of community service providers such as the CFA and the police. Last Friday to celebrate the end of our topic we were fortunate enough to go on a community walk to visit the Warrandyte Police station, Warrandyte Community Garden, Warrandyte Bakery and Warrandyte Library. We would like to sincerely thank all of the community volunteers that gave up their time to make this possible, as well as the parent helpers on the day. Our community certainly is a very special place.
