Learning and Teaching

This term our Integrated Units are based around the Sciences “Earth and Space”  across all grade levels. This focus is centred around the Earth’s dynamic structure and its place in the cosmos.

Junior Year Levels

The Junior Grades will learn about observable changes in the sky and landscape and how seasonal changes affect everyday life.

They will identify Earth’s key natural resources, how they are used in our community and learn about the importance of looking after these resources.

The students will be looking at the appearance of the moon and stars at night as well as the seasons. They will focus on how weather changes influence our everyday lives for both people and animals. This will illustrate to the children how we adapt to changes occurring in the environment around us.

They will also identify the Earth’s resources, including water, soil and minerals and then describe how these are used at both home and school. Lastly they will focus on identifiable actions that can be taken at school to conserve resources and how every small change contributes to a larger one.

Middle Year Levels

The students have been reading and reflecting on the impact people have on the planet earth. This has been a good link to the work they have already  completed last term through their History Unit.

The students will be learning about endangered animals and natural disasters. They  will discover the relative size of Earth and its connections to the Sun and Moon.

The students will discover how both the Moon and Sun play an integral role in everyday life on Earth.

This will include how they affect the process of night and day across the globe. With such a big topic, students will be empowered to craft their own inquiry questions about Space, to be followed up with research and class discussion through the various activities.

Senior Year Levels

The Senior grades will focus on Earth as a part of the Solar System. They will explore how the Earth is part of a system of planets and other celestial bodies that orbit around the Sun.

The students will look at how the Solar System began, and the vital role of the Sun in the Solar System.

They will then explore how sudden geological changes can affect the Earth’s surface.

Keep an eye out in the next newsletter for photos of the students and their learning!
