Out and About

City Life Café Year 9 Excursion
On Wednesday, 20 August, half of the Semester 2 2014 LEAD class had the experience of undertaking a range of activities with the clients at City Life Café. City Life Café is a non-profit organisation that helps disadvantaged/homeless people find their way in life, using their motto “Helping People Dream Again”. When we arrived at the café, we were all surprised to see how huge the building was and the amount of friendly volunteers that were working there.
After having a tour of the building, we sat in a conference room and were taught a brief background of the organisation. We were able to listen to a few inspirational stories about clients the café had helped grow into better people. Our group was surprised when we learned about the generosity and persistence of the volunteers, who were truly passionate about helping their clients.
We then split up into two teams, one group preparing and making food for the clients whilst the other socialized and played games with them. I, Cassie, was a part of the group that interacted with the clients of the café, and doing so has changed my perspective of the disadvantaged.
Playing board games with the clients was an amazing experience that I would do all over again if I could. The majority of the people I interacted with were very bright and beat me in the games we played. One man even taught me to play Chess. It was surprising to see what an amazing organisation City Life Café is and how many people it helps and lives it changes.
As for me, Sona, I had the privilege of being one of the four students who got the opportunity to take part in the cooking process for the clients. While the other two girls (Emily and Nalani) made the soup, Bailey and I made the dessert. We decided on making an orange and coconut cake from scratch. Since most of the cooking ingredients were given through donations, we had to work around with what we had. At times, it did become a bit difficult, but we were able to get through those struggles, and create a lovely dessert with what was available.
I felt great pride and excitement when the cakes finally came out of the oven, looking delicious and beautiful! It's true that money can't buy happiness, but through giving up my time for the disadvantaged and seeing smiles on their faces, makes a big difference! In the afternoon, we worked as a team to create food packages that the clients can take away.
Overall, our time in City Life Cafe was a great experience; not only did I develop my leadership and teamwork skills, but I was also able to make new friends and gain more knowledge about this amazing organisation.

Japan Study Tour 2014
Tomorrow, Saturday, 13 September we farewell 22 students and three staff on a two week tour of Japan. Students will experience the traditional city of Kyoto, visiting temples and shrines, Osaka, Miyajima Island and Nara. They will stay in busy Tokyo for two nights exploring the city and Tokyo Disneyland then one week of homestay at our sister school, Kawaguchi Kita.
Students in the photo are pictured with the 1,000 paper cranes they made and will take to Hiroshima as a symbol of world peace.
I would like to thank the Japanese students of 8M who designed the layout of these cranes and spent many hours putting them together in a display.
I wish everyone involved a fantastic trip. 楽しい二週間をすごして下さい。よい旅を~

Peninsula Schools Chess Tournament August 2014
Second Place
Interschool Peninsula Region Champion
Second Place
Interschool Peninsula Region Schools Champion
Thirteen members of Frankston High School’s Chess Club competed in the annual Peninsula Schools Chess Tournament on Monday, 25 August, at Mornington Secondary College. Our team was runner-up champion for the second year running.
The morning preliminary rounds were fast and furious, with all students battling for a position to progress to the next round. In a display of chess prowess, the FHS Chess Club had 10 of our 13 players advance through to the semi-finals.
Vincent Huang and James Gibson advanced to the semi-final, with Vincent subsequently to the grand final representing Frankston High School against Elisabeth Murdoch College (EMC) in the Grand Final.
This year the fine weather allowed the Grand Final to be played on the large chess set in the court yard. All tournament players surrounded the game, contemplating their own moves and responses “…if only they had made it to this final stage and a chance to be Peninsula School Champion”.
Unfortunately, Vincent was beaten by Mick (EMC) but not before he put up a really good fight.
The Frankston High School Chess Club should be very proud of themselves and their effort, with a display of good sportsmanship and determination to do their best always.
Intermediate Boys’ Table Tennis
The Intermediate Boys’ Table Tennis Zone Competition was played at Carrum Downs Secondary College on Friday, 29 August against other Northern Peninsula schools. Frankston High School entered two teams, with our FHS 1 team dominating against all opposition to finish eventual winners. The FHS 2 team had just the one loss (against FHS 1) and did a great job to finish runners-up.
FHS 1 team members; Ben Hast, Aaron Jackson, Ben Cracknell and Wais Habib, won 46 of the 49 games they played and were clearly the best team on the day. FHS 2 team members; Matt MacNeil, Harry Cameron, Luke Stafford and Jacob Long were the only ‘B’ team in the competition but were still able to defeat all the other school’s teams! Special mention to Jacob Long who filled in for the team and won all his singles games during the day.
FHS 1 now advances to the next level of competition which will be played during Term 4. Good luck to the team in their future games!
