PREP

This week in Prep we have been learning so many things and it has been a great week.

In our Little Learners Love Literacy program this week, we learnt a new sentence 'Sam and Tim got on the big log at the dam.' We focused on our core sounds from this stage 'h, l, b, d, o, g, v, n' and blended them together, along with stage one sounds to make words.

Every morning we do Heggerty and this is when we learn about sounds in words. To do this, we explore rhyming words, we segment words, add phonemes to the start of words and take them away, just to name a few. This phonological program is based on the strategy 'I do, you do' which makes it clear and fun for all learners.

In writing this week, we did a weekend recount, added the next step 'what' onto our colourful semantics - for example 'Gemma is singing on the table' and we took part in our second BIG write.

This is our last week of addition before we move straight into subtraction in week 4. We have had so much fun using different concrete materials and strategies to learn all about addition and we can't wait to see the learning that will take place in our subtraction unit.

We participated in Auslan, Art, PE and Library this week.

GRADE 1/2

We are already a third of the way through Term 2 and there is some fantastic work being completed across the Year 1 and 2 classrooms.

On Wednesday 24th of May, students will have the opportunity to walk over to COPACC and watch ‘Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge’. This is a fantastic experience provided to us by the Arts team.

Students are encouraged to put their homework and reading diaries in their bags on a Thursday night so it is ready to go on Friday when they change it over. We would like students to take the responsibility for this but a friendly reminder from parents wouldn’t go astray.

Well done to Year 2MA on their Prayer Gathering last Friday. It’s very intimidating to stand up in front of the whole school and read and they did a fantastic job

There will be no school for students on Monday 15th as staff will be participating in a whole school PD.

GRADE 3/4

We have had a great few weeks getting back into things.

In Numeracy, we are continuing our addition and subtraction learning.

Hopefully by now you have been able to have a discussion with your child about this week’s BIG WRITE.

The topic prompts were posted for both Grade 3 and 4 on ClassDojo earlier this week. Grade 3 are writing about ‘Locked In!’ and Grade 4 ‘The Lost Cat’. There is no writing required when you discuss the BIG WRITE topic at home, it is just a conversation to tease out your child’s ideas.

This term our RE and Inquiry topics are closely related; we have been doing a lot of learning about our emotions and identity, and have enjoyed sharing our common experiences and strategies for when  emotions get really big.

GRADE 5/6

The Grade 5’s survived a fantastic camp last week, representing St Mary’s exceptionally well. The food was fantastic, the activities even better; laser tag, archery, canoeing, rock climbing, possum glider, flying fox and orienteering did not disappoint. We were extremely lucky with the weather. Although it was extremely cold, we had very little rain.

In Literacy, we are continuing on with our Rod Clement author study and practising our VCOP strategies in preparation for another Big Write.

In Numeracy, we are finishing up our Decimals unit this week and preparing to start a longer unit on Multiplication and Division.

A reminder that Monday 15th May is a pupil free day.

Have a great weekend :)
