Student Leadership

Term 1 Reflection

We have had a wonderful Term 1 at school this year. We did lots of exciting things as part of student leadership and as new Year 7s.

In Week 9, we went to the centre for an Autism awareness workshop day and we had a guest speaker named Honour who is in Year 12 this year. They told us about their life being an autistic person and how it affects them. We made bracelets and fidgets while we sat on a table and listened to a presentation about how their friends and family supported them throughout their life and schooling. After lunch we had another discussion about ways we, as school leaders, can support people with autism within the school.

The new family BBQ happened in Week 5 of Term 1. This is where new students get to attend a welcome BBQ. At the new family BBQ at Henley we had some nice snags, burgers, and soft drinks. Our parents got to meet the teachers and we got to play with the new foundation students.

In Term 1, we also had the Year 7 & 8 Camp in Week 7. On the first day we got introduced to Dave and Ben. After that we got assigned our rooms, some were small and some were big. The next day we got split up into two groups and we did beach activities with Dave and Ben, we did capture the flag with Ben. At lunch we ate soup and after that we went to Lake Pertobe and did some mazes. It was a very enjoyable camp and good to get to spend time with all the Year 7s and 8s.

Alpine School for Leadership

In Term 1 2023, Lolah, Carlos, Ellie, and Layla attended the School for Student Leadership program at Dinner Plain Mount Hotham. During the experience we enjoyed meeting new people and getting to learn new things such as mountain biking, abseiling, and hiking. Some of the highlights we had were when we did a bushdance and other kinds of dancing. Most of the kids there loved mountain biking on trails and on the paved tracks. The Omeo pump track was also a very fun trip. Whilst at the Alpine School, some of the skills we have gained are:

  • More confidence in public speaking
  • Leading a group you don’t know very well
  • Learning new skills like how to tie some knots, using a trangia (camp stove),
  • Learning how to show empathy, teamwork, courage, and perseverance
