Relay for Life

During Term 1, students from Years 5 and 6 (as well as a few from Year 4) took up the challenge to join our 'NCS Prime Movers' Relay for Life team for 2023's event.

RFL is an annual event in Nowra that raises awareness and funds for cancer research through the Cancer Council. Our school has been involved with this community event since its inception decades ago. This year's event was known as 'The Last Lap', as it is to be the final ever RFL event in the Shoalhaven. So we were especially keen to participate one more time.

Students let their friends and families know that they'd be walking / running 500m laps of the course up at the UOW - Shoalhaven Campus in West Nowra on Saturday 25 March. These contacts then sponsored them to do this. The team's original target amount was $3k, which seemed like a lot to begin with. The generosity of those donating meant we quickly passed this and we well beyond even $6k by the time the event rolled around!

On the day team members turned up for their hour long stints and took to the track with gusto. Many stayed much longer and some were even there for the whole 10 hours! Some students and parents managed well over 50 laps (25 km) and others. WIN News were there and quite a few of our team were featured in their broadcast. After banking cash donations and adding them to the online total we've raised $7,047. What an incredible effort by our students, parents and staff.

Congratulations and heartfelt thanks for your hard work and determination.

Water wets and washes wheels well!

As the headline above suggests, there was some 'car washing action' happening on the last Friday of Term 1. Stage 3's NCS Prime Movers, our school's Relay For Life team, washed 20 staff cars. This was part of their fund raising efforts for the Cancer Council's 2023 Nowra RFL event.

About 24 team members from Years 5 and 6 joined together with some helpers from Year 10: Danika, Katie, Annie and Micah, as well as teachers: Mrs. Ellery, Mr. McLennan, Mrs Varga and Mr. Parker to squirt, douse, rub and scrub the score of grimy vehicles!

It was a 'tough gig' and plenty of elbow grease was used, as well as the other usual car washing paraphernalia! Eventually the final chariot was 'chamois-ed' dry and we were finished!

With tired muscles and happy hearts students and staff packed up, knowing that their efforts helped raise several hundred dollars more towards the team's total. This took them well beyond the $7k mark. This is an astounding effort from all concerned. To finish we chewed on some lollies and chocolates which helped re-energize the weary warriors enough to allow some photos to be taken! Thanks for everyone named above and also to our amazing team of groundsmen, who assisted with setting up and packing away. Thanks too to our supportive staff who allowed us to wash their vehicles and or donated to the cause. Much appreciated!

Highlights from CSSA Secondary State Swimming

On Tuesday 2 March, five fantastic swimmers (Millie S, Claire H, Hannah J, Bailey N-E and myself) participated in the CSSA Secondary State Swimming Carnival at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre in Homebush.

It was a busy day with many Christian schools from all over NSW attending the event. The competition at State stepped up a notch. There were many competitors there that were born to be lifelong swimming champions but our school was not beaten!

Our team showed great spirit and commitment in the water. Thanks for a lovely day full of fun cheerleading, positive encouragement, swimming, competition, excitement and laughter.

Year 7's 'special' day out!

On Thursday 27 April, Year 7 had a fantastic day at the Shoalhaven Zoo and the Treetops ropes course. We were blessed with perfect weather and wonderful companions. We couldn’t help but be grateful for God’s beautiful creation in that environment next to the river.

Half of the students spent the morning at Treetops having lots of fun testing their physical and mental strength, while the other half walked around the zoo and got to have a special animal experience which was a bit hair raising as times. After a joint lunch together of sausage sandwiches and drinks the groups swapped over. What a great day with fabulous students and staff. Thank you to Mr Lee, Mrs Drury, Mrs Varga and Ms Beazley.

Narnia Day- A Roaring Success

In the final week of Term 1, Year 5 celebrated Narnia Day. Throughout the whole term they had been studying C. S. Lewis' fantastic book 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,' and it was time to celebrate the end of the unit. Students and teacher alike dressed up as characters from the story or wore mufti. Narnia themed games and quizzes were played, craft made and the movie enjoyed along with treats of Turkish delight and hot chocolate. It was a great way to end the term and fun day for all.

ANZAC Day

This ANZAC Day, the Nowra Christian School community came together to pay tribute to the many men and women who have faithfully served and defended our nation as part of the Australian Defence Force.

Staff and students represented our school at the Greenwell Point Dawn service and the Nowra March, with Harrison F, Noah T, Jenna G and Izzy C laying wreaths in memory of the fallen.

A special ANZAC commemoration assembly was then held on Wednesday, 26 April with primary and secondary student leaders presenting. A special thanks to NCS Alumni, Flight Lieutenant Aimee Parsons, whose thought-provoking address reflected on the service and sacrifice of the first ANZACs and the men and women who would follow in their footsteps in countless military and peacekeeping operations. FLT LT Parsons showed us how it was possible to be a Christian in the Defence Force today, and that, ultimately, it is Christ who shows us the true meaning of sacrifice.

It was wonderful to be joined by the many special guests who attended our service, including World War II veteran Mr Alfred Marcquis (better known as Rusty), Nowra RSL representative Mr John Bailey, Mr Peter Williams who played the bugle, members of the Australian Defence Force and parents and carers.

The catafalque party was once again a highlight of the service and consisted of students who are members of the Australian Defence Force Cadets, Tyler O, Taj C and Levi O. Thank you also to Mr Drury who organised the school concert band, who performed the New Zealand and Australian national anthems, with vocals from Charley L.

The Inaugural Manie Musicale 2023

This is the first time that year 8 French classes have participated in the international Manie Musicale (Music Mania). This program began with French teachers in the USA and has now spread worldwide. A group of teachers choose 16 recent French songs that are appropriate for school audiences. The artists could be individuals or groups and they come from Canada, Ghana, Benin, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Algeria, Cameroon, Martinique, Belgium and France.

The songs were arranged in pairs and throughout March, students voted for one out of each pair. As there were about 4,000 schools voting the results were sometimes surprising!

In groups, our students had to pick a song and then perform it for the rest of the class (singing or lip-syncing). The 3 best groups from each class then performed for year 7 and the judges (Mr Asher and Mr Joliffe) in the Manie Musicale play-offs. While the performances were excellent, the ultimate winners were Lottie Thomas and Caitlyn Sutcliffe in their performance of "Bonjour, Au Revoir" by the French composer / singer Joyce Jonathan. C'est fantastique!

An awesome effort by all our y8 students!

UOW Nursing and Health Day

The UOW Nursing and Health Day was a great morning for seven NCS students to attend the beautiful UOW Shoalhaven Campus and be informed of what study and career possibilities the nursing and health industry have.

After a brief overview of what a Nursing Degree looks like - including hearing from current students, NCS students were able to participate in a range of hands-on activities in the demonstration room, learning about the various procedures that nurses do each day.

There was then time available to speak to people working in the health industry and get firsthand information regarding study pathways and where health jobs can take you. It answered many questions for our students, a big thank you to Mrs Edwards for organising the day.

Training for the Big Day
