Curriculum
We trust that everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday. Term Three is already shaping up to be a busy one with the school’s Athletics Day, Indonesian Day and School Disco just around the corner.
On Wednesday thirteen students will be representing MPRPS at the Whitehorse Division Soccer Round Robin (these students came runners-up at the district level of competition). The day will be held at Mirabooka Reserve, 80-140 Holland Rd, Blackburn South from 9.30am until 1.00pm. We wish the participating students the best of luck and know that they will do our school proud.
Also on Wednesday the students that aren’t competing in the Division Soccer Round Robin will be visiting Forest Hill College to see their school production ‘Rock of Ages’. We are very fortunate to be invited to attend as our own school production will be held later in the term. Students will have an opportunity to view and analyse how the actors use the stage, project their voices and engage the audience. As part of the writing unit, students will be writing a review about the production, analysing elements which would have previously been discussed in class. In addition to this, students will be analysing and comparing a range of reviews during the student led tasks during Reading sessions. Small teacher-guided sessions will also be conducted where students read through and discuss reviews that are targeted to their individual abilities.
In Maths, students will be comparing, ordering and working with fractions & decimals. We will continue to conduct Number Talk sessions (which were showcased at the Maths Workshop Night-late last term) where students will be able to showcase the strategies used to work out a number of different problems. This provides a wonderful opportunity for all students to share their ideas in a non-judgemental and safe environment as well as allow them to learn from each other.
The Term Three Homework Grid has been shared with all students with one task each to be completed and signed by an adult each week. Photo evidence is also encouraged (where applicable) as teachers love to see the wonderful creations. Ten Mathletics tasks are set each week for students to complete with 20-30 minutes of reading each night expected and documented in their diaries.

Advanced Presentation Skills Debating
Congratulations to all Year 5/6 students who graduated from the Advanced Presentation Skills Debating Course. All students impressed their teachers and families with a very high standard of Debating and Off the Cuff Speeches.
5/6G debated “That all Australians born after the year 2005 should be banned from buying and/or smoking cigarettes.” The negative team made up of Thomas Clancy, Holly State and Samhita Manjunath were announced the winning side. All six students were well informed, well researched and spoke with great passion, persuasion and more than a little bit of humor thrown in for good measure. The audience was impressed and thoroughly entertained.
5/6S argued the topic “That homework should not be given to primary school students.” In this debate the negative team consisting of Olivia White, Imogen Smith and Marcus Ta were the winning side. All speakers were well prepared and came up with very effective rebuttals.
5/6B’s topic was “That street art is nothing more than graffiti and therefore should be removed.”
Once again the adjudicators decided that the negative team won but only by a very small margin. Congratulations to Mikayla Williams, Thomas Mears and Areeba Shakir.
5/6W argued “That AFL players are overpaid. (Is a football player worth six times as much as a nurse?) This time the affirmative team made up of Simrah Zaveri, Ryan Weir and Hayden Eng were announced the winners. All six students had a very high standard of presentation, but I thought the content is where the students could have improved, spending more time on the average annual wage of a nurse as stated in the topic.
Trophies were awarded to:
Best Debating Speaker | Best Off the Cuff Speaker | Most Improved Speaker | |
5/6G | Auray Hu | Rhea Modi | Euan Holmes |
5/6S | Olivia White | Alex Moraitis | Zavian Mareida |
5/6B | Thomas Mears | Hannah Garrow | Oliver Steele |
5/6W | Ryan Weir | Olivia Molimis | Simrah Zaveri |
Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who came along to witness the result of seven weeks intensive training. The team efforts of the students and teachers alike were much appreciated. I hope that you remember the skills you have learnt including concise research and working effectively as a team, as I am sure this will stand you in good stead for secondary school and beyond.
