Children Left in Hot Cars

It was terrible to hear the story in the news this week about the two Brisbane toddlers who died after being were left in their mother’s car on a day of 31C.

As temperatures begin soar, so too do the dangers of leaving kids alone in cars on hot days.  On hot days, the temperature jumps as soon as the car door closes. Within minutes the temperature in the car can double, which can be extremely dangerous – even fatal – for children left inside. Although it is never the intention to leave children alone for long, many parents do so while making a quick stop at the newsagent, chemist, or corner shop.

A quick stop to pick something up can take much longer than expected. Research shows that one in three parents admit to leaving children alone in the car, with one in five believing it is acceptable for less than five minutes.

Young children are particularly at risk as their body temperature can reach dangerous levels more quickly than expected. A young child’s body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult’s does, placing them at greater risk of life threatening heatstroke, dehydration and other health risks. When it’s 30 degrees outside, children could be suffering in up to 60 degree heat. When travelling with a child, parents need to make sure they take their child with them - no exceptions, no excuses!

Congratulations

Hume Scholarship Recipient: Eylul K

The Hume Education Scholarship Fund was established in 1999 and is available to selected Year 6 students who live and attend a primary school within Hume City. The grant is designed to support the education of promising and deserving students within Hume.

Eylul received the 2020 Hume City Council Education Scholarship in recognition of academic excellence and for displaying the qualities of good citizenship both at school and the wider community. It is an annual award, presented to one year 6 student from each primary school in Hume City. Students are nominated by their school and receive $1000 towards secondary school expenses. This scholarship celebrates the importance of education and lifelong learning, encouraging students to continue the pursuit of academic excellence and good citizenship as they make their transition into secondary education.

Eylul received this award at a presentation ceremony held on Thursday 21st November at the Hume Global Learning Centre in Craigieburn. She will also have it presented at the Year 6 Graduation on December 19th. Congratulations Eylul!
