What a fantastic start we have had to 2023! Our Year 11 Induction Day was a great success with students settling into their new home environment and all of the routines that come along with boarding. It can be a nerve-wracking time for students as they are faced with making new friends, finding their place and familiarising themselves with the structures of Class, Trades, Farm and Residential. Students and parents are encouraged to reach out and touch base if any concerns arise or support of any kind is required.

Our 'stay in weekend' was a great way for Year 11 and 12 students to get to know each other. Adventure World on Saturday was a fun and relaxing way to enjoy each other's company (despite the 5 hours of nauseousness that the 'Renegade' ride gifted me).  A big thank you to Ms KV and the Residential Staff for making it happen.

Today I spoke to all students about our College culture. Our College is steeped with traditions (which is what makes us unique and special) however, there are some traditions that are outdated and no longer align with modern day societal expectations. Here at Cunderdin Ag, we treat others with utmost respect and ensure that fun and enjoyment is never at the expense of others. I also spoke about the importance of making mature and sensible decisions and maintaining college rules and expectations, including being respectful to staff and students, abiding by PPE and safety procedures, jewellery requirements on Farm and Trades, and also presentation and haircuts.

Students have been informed that if they do not comply with haircuts as of Monday next week, they are not eligible for off-site activities such as town run, sports competitions and training, Graeme Wood Shield, Autumn Carnival, Surf Camp etc. For students staying in this weekend, there will be an opportunity for students to get their hair cut at the Carousel Shopping centre on Saturday.

2022 Drought Resilience Challenge Results

Late last year we ran our 'Drought Resilience and Innovation Challenge' in partnership with Grower Group Alliance and the South-West WA Drought Resilience Adoption and Innovation Hub.  Students were challenged with developing an innovative tool, solution or systems change that would increase the future economic, environmental and social resilience of WA farm businesses in a hotter and drier climate with more variability.

We had some fantastic submissions and I'd like to congratulate the following students on their achievements:

  • 1st Place ($500) - Matilda Williams (for her water collection, harnessing and use efficiency plan)
  • 2nd Place ($350) - Zarah Squiers and Mackenzie Elliott (for their water evaporation minimisation invention)
  • 3rd Place ($150) - Daniel May (for his water harnessing solution)

The Challenge is scheduled to run again for Year 12 students with the involvement of other Ag Colleges in 2023, and I encourage our Year 12 students to get involved in this year's challenge.
