Year 7 and 8 Leadership Camp

Student Reflections

Recently, a selected number of students throughout Year 7 and 8 went on a camp to the CYC in the city. We learnt about values, being grateful and of course, how to be a better leader.

We left on Wednesday 16 December and arrived back at school on Friday 18 December. Throughout those 3 days we did a wide variety of activities including ice skating, seeing the MYER windows.

Everyone got involved and had a blast!  Thanks to all the teachers that took time out of their schedule to do this with us. We all had an amazing time and are grateful for having this opportunity!

I was lucky enough to be invited to the Year 7 and 8 Leadership Camp for 2022. The camp ran from Wednesday 16 November to Friday 18 November. The lead up was very exciting.

We went in on the train after Period 1 on Wednesday and chilled out in Flagstaff Gardens for a little while. Then we walked over to our accommodation, sorted out our “tribes'' which would be our groups for the many activities to come. Our first activity for Wednesday afternoon was an Amazing Race. Tribes travelled far and wide to complete the most tasks, for the most points. We had dinner and then in our tribes worked on some leadership activities, like learning about cue cards for speeches and we also wrote letters to ourselves for when we are in Year 12.

Thursday morning, we ate some yummy breakfast. Then came the main attraction of the day, we went to the Queen Victoria Market, of course our mates couldn't resist getting some food or even some posters. Then we played some team games that afternoon.

Thursday night after a scrumptious dinner, we watched the movie “Encanto” (with popcorn of course) after, we analysed the movie for its leadership values and discussed the movie.

Friday morning, we packed up our things and went on a long walk to the Shrine of Remembrance. The tribes were taken on a tour through the shrine and shown many relics, pieces of information and even a few stunning views, when we went up to the top balconies of the shrine. After that was a trip to Southern Cross Station and we were homebound.

After 3 days of lots of fun, leadership development and tram chaos, we were back to Lilydale High School.

I was beyond and over the moon when I found out I was chosen to go on leadership camp. The camp is a once in a lifetime experience for about 50 selected students to participate in, and go to the city for 3 days.

We do a bunch of activities that help students use their leadership skills others saw in them, we are put in groups so everyone feels as if they have a group to lead. We do activities such as the amazing race, where students go around the city and complete a worksheet about places in the city, going from the Melbourne Goal, to the State Library, each student gets to explore the wonders of the city with others.

I say the best bit of the camp was getting to know new people each day, from hearing them give a speech about a topic they’re passionate about, from helping them complete group activities around the city. I say this camp is an experience people should consider aiming to achieve, it’s a lifetime experience I certainly enjoyed and I think others would.

Dear Future Year 7s

My Year 7 was really fun!  We started the year with a camp to Phillip Island for two nights. We got to do a lot of great activities and we got a break from home and school life.

One of my favourite parts of Year 7 was Leadership Camp because it was a new and exciting experience. We caught trains into the city, stayed in a hotel and did lots of great activities around the city. We also caught trams around the city to different locations and went ice skating!  Year 7 was a great year!

These students will be presenting their husbandry skills with local primary schools in our community in 2023.
