Northern Schools Steer Competition

On 15-17 November, 15 of our students and 4 head of cattle accompanied Miss Burgess and Mrs Lamph to Manilla for the Northern Schools Competition hosted by Tamworth and Peel High Schools.

Wednesday the 16 November, saw the students competing in paraders classes with Will Wright, Suzie Lockwood, Ilyssa Newbury, Kaitlyn Casson and Isla McIndoe making the finals of the juniors. Ilyssa went on to place 3rd and Will placed first. In the intermediate age group, Alex Wright, Lily Cooke and Greg Sieber made the finals, with Alex placing 4th. In the Seniors, Corey Chaffey made the finals but was unplaced. Will Wright went on to be judged Champion Parader.

In the afternoon, the cattle were judged. In the lightweight classes, we had Louie - a Charolais cross steer from the Newbury family, who placed 3rd in his class - Louie weighed 414kg.

In the heavyweight classes, we had 2 steers and a heifer. The last class of the day was the largest and resulted in 2 heats being run. In the first heat, we had Outback - a Speckle Park X Limousin steer purchased from the Winter Family at Winter Speckle Park. Obie weighed 578kg and unfortunately, he was unplaced.

In the second heat, we had Rosco, an Angus steer, purchased from Peter and Deb Kamphorst. He weighed in at 604kg and was selected to compete in the final of the class where he was unplaced.

We also had Bessie, an Angus heifer kindly donated by the Klingner Family. She weighed in at 608kg. We thank the Klingner family for their support of our Ag Program.

Thursday morning saw the junior judging competition. All Students were required to judge 3 classes of cattle. Jasmine Klingner made the cut to speak in front of all the students and went on to place 3rd in the junior division.

Thank you to all the suppliers of our cattle - we could not do what we do without your support, and the students for their hard work. Thank you to Miss Burgess for driving some students and for all your work and organisation. Thank you also to Ben and Marty for your hard work in making the competition possible.

Grand Champion Carcase at Northern Schools!

Rosco was named Champion Heavyweight carcase with a score of 92.9 out of 100 and went on to be the highest scoring carcase of the whole competition. Rosco is an Angus steer purchased from Peter and Deb Kamphorst. Interestingly this is the second great success the school has had with cattle from Peter and Deb. In 2017 an Angus steer from them was named grand champion on the hoof and reserve champion on the hook. We thank Deb and Peter for their support of our program.

In the same class, we also had Outback and Bessie. This was the largest class of the competition and there were 20 entries. Outback (Obie) scored an 89 and placed 3rd while Bessie placed 7th. Obie actually had the 3rd highest point score in the carcase competition. Obie was purchased from the Winter Family while Bessie was donated by the Klingner Family.

We also had Louie in the lightweight classes but unfortunately, he was unplaced. Louie was a Charolais X steer from the Newbury Family.

We would like to thank the suppliers of our cattle and Riverina Stockfeeds for the support of our program. As well as Jim Core, our Farm Assistant, for looking after the cattle so well.
