From the Senior Sports Master

As we close the first half of the ISA Summer Season, whilst noting District Cricket continues, can I take this opportunity to thank you all for your efforts in making sure the College has had such a successful start to the season in both cricket and basketball. Congratulations should also go to our NSTA tennis players and our Pennants squash teams for their efforts in Term 4.

The ISA Summer Season will resume on Saturday 4 February 2023 and concludes mid-March.  NSTA Tennis and Pennants Squash will resume in early February - dates to be confirmed.

On our return in 2023, the Senior School Swimming Carnival will be our first major event, to be held on Tuesday 14 February at Macquarie University Aquatic Centre.

Please take the summer holidays to replenish any worn out sports uniforms, ready for the recommencement of the summer season.

In the meantime, have a very good Christmas and a Happy New Year.

See you again 2023.

Mr Matt Stearn - Senior Sports Master

1st XI (8/90) v St Augustine’s College (10/89) @ Oxford Falls – Saturday 26 November 2022

The 6th and final ISA round for 2022 was played at home against the undefeated St Augustine’s College. Fielding first, the 1st XI maintained their strong bowling and fielding efforts which had seen them bowl out the opposition throughout the term. Mitch McGrath (2-11 off 5 overs) produced a probing opening spell and took a fine caught and bowled. Jesse Mansbridge again was tight and deserved his figures of 2 for 15 off 8 overs. All other bowlers played their part as wickets fell regularly as Andrew May (2-20 off 10), Manas Bansal (1-13 off 10) and fellow off-spinner Will Pavely (1-13) contributed well. Joel Austin’s fielding in the inner circle was high class with a catch and a direct hit run out, while Ollie Freeman, Lachlan Jursevic, Tom Lough, Darcy Aylmer and Andrew May all took their chances; Mitch McGrath also executed a run out. The opposition were dismissed for 89 in the 46th over. A poor start saw the home team struggling at 3 for 13 but a gutsy innings from Pat Frost (17) after taken a blow to his arm steadied things with a counterattacking Manas Bansal (18). When they were dismissed, it was left to last week’s rescue duo of Ollie Freeman (24 not out) and Tom Lough (10) to get the team within sight of victory. However, a mini collapse kept the crowd on the edge of their seats until Jesse Mansbridge provided support to Freeman who showed great maturity to steer the team home to a hard fought win by two wickets.

2nd XI Report

The second 11 have made a successful start to the 2022/2023 ISA Cricket season placing them in strong contention for an upper bracket split of the ladder in the latter stages of the competition.  Four wins have been underlined by several individual and collective contributions from a determined and resolute playing group. Moreover, the support of parents, coaching staff, match officials, scorers, ground staff and the opposition has invited a welcome return from COVID-affected cricket. Senior Basketball

A solid finish to the SPX Basketball season with our undermanned 1st V winning away at St Patrick’s after earlier wins for the 14A and 17A teams. All ‘C’ teams bar the 17’s beat St Patrick’s at home, whilst our 15D, 17D and 4ths won away at Central Coast. In our ‘E’ and ‘F’ team comps, the 15’s and 17’s again flew the flag, claiming victories against St Andrews and Oakhill respectively whilst the 6ths cruised home against Redlands.

NSTA Tennis

What an amazing term we have had with not a drop of rain in sight for all 6 rounds! Each week the young men of Pius displayed excellent sportsmanship and good manners in their matches. I received many compliments from our visitors congratulating the boys on their behaviour both on and off the courts.

Congratulations to the 14 teams that made the finals last weekend, especially to the 7 teams who won their divisions.

The competition would have been very difficult to run on my own, so thank you also to Mrs Karen Keighery, Mr David Webster and Mr Alex Listo who have helped to keep things running so smoothly each week. Of course, my final thank you must go to the parents, grandparents and siblings who drove the boys to their matches and cheered them on each week.

I look forward to seeing everyone back again next year!
