Science Club

We had lots of fun at our last Science Club for 2023 because we made Christmas ice cream from scratch! We even had some new Year 7 students from Mrs Schuster’s Science class come along... as they had heard there would be food!

The way it was made was by adding cream, milk, vanilla essence and sugar to a snaplock bag and then placing that bag in a larger snaplock bag containing ice and salt. When salt is added to ice it lowers the temperature of the ice... quite considerably, so as we mixed the cream mixture amongst the salted ice for up to 10 minutes, it caused it to freeze... and made icecream! Some groups added food colouring and crushed candy canes to make the icecream Christmas-themed and others just ate it as-is.

I would like to thank our group of Year 11/12 Leaders who have diligently attended Science Club each fortnight and been a huge help to the Science staff. These include Xander Buckingham, Darcy Keenlyside, Oisin Whooley, Ben Woollard, Eamon Boyle and others throughout the year.

A big thank you also to Mr ten Seldam and Mr Camilleri, for all their help organising and sourcing equipment to keep the Club alive.

I look forward to a bigger and better Science Club in 2023... have a wonderful break over the holiday and a peaceful Christmas.

Mrs Joanne Schuster - Science Coordinator

2022 Microfiction Anthology

After much writing, illustrating and editing the final edition of the SPX Microfiction Anthology has been published. The anthology contains a collection of the outstanding 100-word stories with accompanying illustrations by students. There are too many contributors to name here, so you’re invited to open the attached PDF and witness the wonderful work of the St Pius X College creative community.

Many thanks go to the Visual Arts Department for collaborating so openly and excitedly with the English Department to produce what is a glossy and professional published work. We are looking forward to expanding the competition in 2023, as well as introducing the Pius Laureate Poetry Prize.

All students who have had stories and illustrations included in the anthology will be presented with a physical copy of the book at Monday’s final school assembly.

Mr Daniel Quilty - English Coordinator

Reading List for the Holidays

As English teachers we know it can be tricky to get boys off the technology and into reading.

Please find attached a list that may help you to sort out some page turning Christmas gifts for teens.

Whilst not exhaustive, please find a list of regularly borrowed, and loved, books and series to get your boys reading this summer break.

This is designed as a guide for your next trip to the bookshop or Library over the holidays – hopefully they may discover the magic!
