Performing Arts & Auslan News

Performing Arts & Auslan LOTE

It’s only week one and already we’re off to a busy and exciting start in Performing Arts and Auslan! Students were happy to discover the new combined Performing Arts/Auslan Space in the Music Room, with a new home for our ukuleles, new rugs and lots of Auslan signing resources and games to explore.

Victorian State Schools Spectacular

Preparation for auditions for the Victorian State Schools Spectacular Mass Dance ensemble have begun. Students from Years 4 – 6 this week learnt a hip-hop dance from last year’s Spec to perform at Monday’s 1.30pm audition in the Bampi. Sixteen students will be selected to represent the school at this exciting event.

WPS is very proud to be participating in Mass Choir at this year’s Spectacular, too. Interested students from Years 4 – 6 will learn an audition song next Tuesday, to be sung at the group audition on Thursday at 1.40pm in the Music Room. Information about the auditions, including selection criteria and important rehearsal and performance dates, will be posted on Compass. Both the Dance and Choir ensembles will be required to rehearse once a week at school until the two September 9 performances at John Cain Arena.

Lunchtime Clubs

This year I will be running two lunchtime clubs which are open to all students. On Mondays, Auslan Club will meet in the Music Room. Students from Prep – Year 6 are welcome to come along and enjoy ‘voices off’ signing activities, with games, role play, signing of songs and story books.

Wednesday lunchtimes will be the Music and Moovers Club. This is also open to students of all ages. Activities, ranging from boom whackers and recorder ensembles, to musical theatre and tap dancing, will be offered based on student choice.

Warrandyte Festival

Be sure to mark this year’s festival date, Saturday, March 18 in your diaries! Our senior students have been busy auditioning with Kevin O’Mara for instrumental roles in Bush Band, and Eliza has been creating colourful ideas for our parade float. More information about the stage performances and the street parade will be shared in the near future.

Congratulations, Zack!

Congratulations to Zack P from 4/5R who performed in the title role of Stage School’s production of “Oliver Jr” at the Meat Market theatre during the holidays. Although the youngest cast member in the show, Zack sang, danced and acted with the maturity, skill and talent of an experienced professional. It was great to see so many of our WPS families in the audience supporting Zack as he entertained and inspired all.
