Surfing Day Outdoor Ed

Some nervous, some intrigued and excited, our Outdoor Education class travelled to Point Leo for a session of surfing. After about one hour of driving we arrived at the little town of Point Leo. We drove around for a while but soon we found the people who run Salty Surf School. We were introduced to the friendly instructors and got directed to put on our wetsuits and water shoes. After struggling to put on our wetsuits, we grabbed a surfboard each and walked down the track to the beach.

First, we learnt the steps of how to get up onto the board, on the sand. You have to first lie down, then push your arms up, then put one leg forward in a kneeling position, then finally move the other foot forward to slide and stand up slowly. Eager to try, we walked through the rocky water to a deeper part to catch some waves. A lot of us were so surprised about how warm the water was because of the wetsuits. Some of the students had experience and just went off on their own and had a go but the rest of us got help from the instructors. We got pushed when a wave came, then swam to the side and back to the instructors. The system really helped us all get a lot of time practising to surf. We got tumbled and smashed with waves but there were only laughs to be heard. Even with salty throats from the water, everyone improved at least a little bit during the hour we had and we all had so much fun!

We then went back and got changed and packed up to go get lunch. We stopped at Point Leo to buy food and then sat at a park for an hour or so to eat. By the time everyone got on the bus, most of us were exhausted. What was awesome about the surfing trip was that we all encouraged each other and improved our skills while having so much fun! I’m sure most of us would definitely love to go again!
