Once again, thank you for your cooperation at our Oxford Falls and Talus St venues for what was a very wet Saturday of sport. Your cooperation with our COVID protocols is creating the safest environment we can for all who attend. We had 289 spectators registered last Saturday through the ISA COVID SMS system. Please keep up the good work with regards to the contact-tracing system.
Could I ask parents to ensure that they know which teams their sons are playing for and against to assist us in directing you to the correct venues when spectating. This is because parents will be separated from their sons at warm-up time, as the boys will be entering the venues prior to spectators.
I would like to take this opportunity to clarify that ALL wet weather information on match days will appear on the College App. This links directly to the College Website. The previously-used Senior Sport Wet Weather page on Twitter is NO LONGER OPERATIONAL.
COVID Protocols for Saturday 31 October
A full copy of the St Pius COVID-19 protocols for sport can be found below. Please familiarise yourselves with this document. Please be aware that we have no control over AWAY game venues with regards to their protocols and will publish these as and when they become available.
Please check the College App before departure to games for any updates we have received. We do know at this stage that Oakhill College are having NO Spectators at their sports venues. This applies to both cricket and basketball.
Mr Matt Stearn - Senior School Sportsmaster
With overcast skies all players took to the courts and were able to play some excellent tennis. It is especially pleasing to see the players in the lower divisions giving umpiring a go. At 8.00 am an exciting doubles match was played between Daniel Harper and William Fiore, SPX 19 and Ethan Auer and Matthew Lee, SPX 17 with a final score of 5-6 to SPX 17. Congratulations to Ryan Seeto and Adam Fitrzyk, SPX 16 with a clean sweep against Redlands 27, not a point lost!
At 10.00 am, congratulations to Ryan Fong and Rory Cooper, SPX 4 who played Redlands and despite dropping one set won overall by 2 games. Oliver Wilkowski and Edward Yangoyan, SPX 7 again won all 3 sets, 18 games in total!
Thank you once again to Mrs Keighery, Mr Webster and Mr Garvey who did another wonderful job running the tennis at Talus St.
Please ensure that you are checking your weekly scores, rankings and draw on the xpoint site: https://www.xpointsports.com/region/325/currentEvents.

ISA Round 1 – 1st XI v St Augustine’s College at Oxford Falls #1
A drama filled day ended when the rain persisted enough for an abandonment and a drawn result in the 1st Round of this term’s ISA competition against St Augustine’s. Joe Colgan, Captain, won the toss and decided to bat first. After the early loss of in-form batsman, Tom Wunsch, the Captain and Joel Austin put together what is thought to be the highest ever partnership in SPX 1st XI history. Their stand of 242 featured great stroke play, aggressive running between the wickets and a willingness to take advantage of the strong start they made. Colgan ended up on 127 not out off 128 balls and Austin scored an undefeated 105 in a display of batting that all spectators appreciated. Each batsman hit 10 boundaries which meant they ran 170 of their runs.
The final total of 1 for 253 after 50 overs had the team well placed but SPX was down two bowlers. A Glenn McGrath style injury before the game when Harrison O’Brien rolled his ankle on a ball and blow to the head of James Power after a ball was hit back at full force by the opposition opener left our bowling stocks depleted. After a wicket to Logan Nicey, St Augustine’s were 1 for 29 from 8 overs before the rain came.
SPX 1 for 253 (Joe Colgan 127 not out, Joel Austin 105 not out) drew with St Augustine’s 1-29 (Logan Nicey 1-4).
Fixtures – Saturday 31 October 2020
Fixtures are correct at time of publication. Players and parents are requested to check myCricket for any late changes.
Congratulations to Keelan Mendel (142 runs), Joel Austin (105 not out) and Joe Colgan (127 not out) at Saturday's games.
Match Reports
Mr David Reay - Cricket Convenor
Thank you to everyone who helped get our season off and running on Saturday. It was a smooth start from my point of view. We had some great matches against ourselves on Saturday at Oxford Falls. All the D teams played the E teams and some of our Opens teams locked horns in their first round matches. I’m happy to say all games were played in good spirit. There were great wins and some humbling losses across all our age groups and divisions.
Game of the day: The Firsts started their season off with a hard-fought win over St Andrews'. Well done to Danny Garret (Coach) and the team.
Deserves a mention: Oscar Kalcher (14Ds) tried his best to rally his troops in a close match against our 14Es.

Sydney Summer Junior Pennant 2020-21
Unfortunately, the scoreboard didn’t look too good for many of the teams last weekend. Saying that, many of the boys are new to squash and playing competitively for the very first time. It was good to see Josh Monico and Ben Christensen improve significantly in their second week of squash as well as Tom Connaghan winning his first ever game. Fitness is key to this sport and the effects of playing squash regularly are starting to have a positive impact on performance. Hopefully the fruits of their labour will translate into victory soon!
